Mid-South TV Title Tournament: Terry Taylor vs. Masao Ito (2/29/84)

 

Taylor dominates the early part of the match but Ito would get his stomach claw on the ribs of Taylor that seemed like it would last forever. Taylor would make a fiery comeback before a ref bump. Ito would throw Taylor over the top rope and tries to revive the referee as Taylor crawls to the other side of the ring. Taylor would come in and got an O’Connor Roll to get the dupe. Nice finish.

 

The Rock n Roll Express (Robert Gibson & Ricky Morton) vs. The Midnight Express (Dennis Condrey & Bobby Eaton) (2/29/84)

 

This is their first ever televised match. The crowd is fucking nuclear for this one as the RnR who had been around for just a couple of weeks have started a revolution among the fans especially the girls. Morton gets a great huracarana on Eaton early on that sets the tone of this match as everyone is working their ass off in a frenzied style. The Russians would come in after the double dropkick on Eaton and they start cutting Morton’s hair before Magnum & Taylor would make the save. This was an awesome segment that has to be an extra just for historic significance.

 

Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Jason Walker (2/29/84)

 

Jake returns home with his legendary gimmick. Ross talks about Duggan working in Florida before the match as they actually acknowledge him working heel there but don’t know why.

 

“Nature Boy” Buddy Landell & “Hacksaw” Butch Reed vs. “Leaping” Lanny Poffo & George Weingroff (2/29/84)

 

Landell/Reed team is just so fucking great. Poffo & Weingroff look really good here too and this is a fun match.

 

Watts interviewed II about winning the NA title from JYD and sending JYD packing for 90 days so he could go to work for Crockett. Then they show clips of II walking out on Magnum causing them to lose the tag titles.

 

The Rock n Roll Express (Robert Gibson & Ricky Morton) vs. Jerry Grey & Pat Rose (3/14/84)

 

RnR look great.

 

The MX celebrate winning the Mid-South Tag Titles and this is one of the most legendary angles ever and a slam dunk extra.

 

Terry Taylor vs. Nikolai Volkoff (3/14/84)

 

Back and forth early on until Taylor dropkicks Volkoff over the top rope which brings Krusher out. Volkoff tries to press slam Taylor but he counters into an O’Connor Roll until Krusher interferes. They go to hang Taylor again until Duggan returns with a huge 2x4 to clear the ring.

 

Magnum TA vs. “Nature Boy” Buddy Landell (3/14/84)

 

Magnum throws some great forearm smashes here and Landell bumps all over the ring for him. Very fun match.

 

Masao Ito & “Hacksaw” Butch Reed vs. Obie Davis & Josh Stroud (3/14/84)

 

Reed looks awesome here.

 

Cornette whines about the video being played again and this kickstarts the Mid-South phenomenon as Cornette & Watts have an argument with Cornette putting his hands on Watts and making fun of Joel thus getting slapped in the process.

Obviously the Cornette stuff goes on, as that was incredible, I don't think the R+R's v. MX match is a disc selection, but it was pretty fun. I liked the T.A. v. Landell match too
