The "lost" NJPW young lion has become a very versatile wrestler proficient in technical wrestling, Lucha Libre, the modern NJPW "house style," and even deathmatches. He has become an important piece to the NJPW Junior Heavyweight division and is a fan favorite for many. In many ways, he mirrors Hiromu Takahashi to some degree. Desperado is able to convey emotion in his matches to a very palpable degree, a gift that not many wrestlers have. Certainly, someone that could contend for the lower half of a few Top 100 lists. July 26, 20232 yr comment_6007962 Despy's going to be one of those peak/consistency debates because his last few years have been great, he's spent a long time wrestling terrible shtick-heavy matches before then and you'd only ever see him turn on the gas against very few opponents. Had a horrid NOAH stint on top of that. He also kinda suffers from NJPW-isms where he's wrestling either overextended matches which expose the hollowness of some of his formulas like his usual leg work and co, especially when it typically leads nowhere. Tentative on if he'll get on or not but if he keeps up his rate of decent to solid Jr outings (no interest in his hardcore stuff) I think he'll definitely get a spot.
July 26, 20232 yr comment_6007969 Before 2020 I didn't pay much attention to him outside of the Hiromu matches, but since the pandemic, he's been one of New Japan's more consistent wrestlers and has me wanting to check out his older stuff.
July 27, 20232 yr comment_6007995 Definitely deserves consideration just because he and Ishii managed to have a super exciting match in an empty crowd arena at the 2020 New Japan Cup.
August 2, 20232 yr comment_6008385 His last three years are full of highlights but there's nothing good before that.
