Posted May 31May 31 comment_6030588 Red Rooster vs. Koko B. Ware (Boston 12/3/88) - Feeling out to start with Rooster hooking the headlock and Koko getting in a leg scissor. This is giving me Mid South/UWF vibes. Koko sends Taylor to the outside after 3 consecutive shoulder blocks. Fun shtick as Rooster pushes Koko and Koko knocks him out of the ring. Great punch by Taylor and then Koko reciprocates. Really liking this so far. Koko whips Rooster into the corner, Flair flip and he lands on the announcers at ringside. Awesome. Back in the ring, Rooster screws up hitting Koko’s head and Koko follows up with punches, a headbutt and the corner slams. Koko puts in the side headlock and the announcer is telling him to get rid of the headlock. I agree. Taylor fights out and catches Koko with a sweet backbreaker. Some great criss crosses lead to a Koko dropkick that sends Taylor to the floor. Rooster decides to leave but comes back. Inside, Koko fires away with great punches but misses a shoulder charge and hits the post. Rooster smells blood and works the arm. Koko tries to fight back but a nice neckbreaker cuts him off. Taylor hooks in a long chinlock to hurt the match a bit but it picks up in the stretch run. Koko’s comeback is awesome and lights up the crowd. As he hits a flying body press, the time limit expires. I don’t think I’m crazy. This was an EASY NOMINATION.
June 1Jun 1 comment_6030598 I smiled when I heard Rod Trongard on commentary. A favorite bad commentator of mine. Sean Mooney cutting the Rooster off in the pre-match promo got a chuckle out of me too. The early minutes are really entertaining. The posturing for a slap fight is especially fun. Rooster keeps losing each exchange & getting angrier. The corner bump into the announce table is outstanding. That got a laugh out of me & Trongard's reaction is hysterical. Rooster finally cuts Koko off thanks to a missed corner charge. This is where the match falters with Rooser putting in a long chin lock. Even Superstar Graham on commentary disliked it. Koko's selling & comebacks are great though & we get a sick looking backbreaker by Rooster on a cut off. I did love Rooster getting frustrated with Koko's resilience & just gouging at his eyes. Great spot. Koko's big comeback starts to get really good & then the time limit expires. It's a very strong match, but I did want a little more out of Rooster's control segment & I wanted Koko's comeback to go a bit deeper before the expiration. Great early going though & some excellent stooging from Rooster & selling later on by Koko. You're not crazy Will, but I'd go middle nom here. SOLID NOMINATION
June 1Jun 1 comment_6030602 Crowd is into most of the match and the persoanlity shown by both Koko and Rooster really eleavtes this (between Koko not backing down and Rooster's stooging and bumping). The match does slow downa at times with the side headlock by Kko and the chinlocks by Rooster, but they keep the crow into it with their character work. Agree that this is a nomination, I'd say middle nom for me (out of a low/mid/solid/easy scale).
