I nominate this solely on Owen being sensational here. He did everything well. Even the random boston crab was fine. Taylor was just had no sense of structure and his heel offense lacked so much. All of the hope spots were good in this all because of Owen. The missed cross body which was a tremendous bump, going full force and selling Taylor's punches like death, and selling everything well. He did some good armwork on Taylor early and had some nice exchanges at the opening bell. His final flurry of offense was tremendous especially his tope to the floor. I liked the finish okay with Taylor going for his finisher but Owen reversing it into a cradle only for time to expire but man was this a solo performance. Owen deserves all the credit in the world for this match.
June 1Jun 1 comment_6030606 Blue Blazer vs. Red Rooster (MSG 12/30/88) - Hillbilly Jim introduced before the match and is doing commentary. Rooster stalls early on as Blazer tries to engage. Blazer had enough of shtick so he slaps Rooster and rams his head in the buckle. Rooster tries to control with a headlock but Blazer shows off his offense. Every time the Rooster tries to get a breather, Blazer is right in his space. Blazer hooks on an armbar and works moves in and out. Crowd comes alive after some near falls and a Blazer Boston Crab. Rooster finally takes control and a jawbreaker shows Blazer writhing in pain. Blazer injures his arm after ramming it into the corner post. Now Rooster attacks the arm with a Fujiwara armbar and some Dick Murdoch arm work. Taylor can’t put Blazer away and is losing his cool. Blazer gets some near falls with the ref’s help and Rooster is frustrated. Nice 2nd rope elbow from Rooster. I thought that would miss. Taylor isn’t letting Balzer get momentum and hooks the arm for dear life. Owen escapes and hits a German but can’t hook the pin. He hits a desperation enziguiri and Rooster flip bumps. A 2nd rope dropkick gets a 2 count. Owen does a suicide dive to the outside and the Garden erupts. Taylor hits a stun gun to stop the momentum and as Blazer pins Taylor, the bell rings for the draw. Another Red Rooster SOLID NOMINATION. Him and Koko are having a great month.
June 1Jun 1 comment_6030622 Here are Dylan's thoughts from a few years back: Red Rooster vs. Blue Blazer - MSG 12/30/88 Really awesome, ahead of it's time match. Taylor really worked well with Owen's quasi-junior style as there are several nifty exchanges in this on his end plus the usual smoothness that was Owen from this period. This is not quite as good as Horowitz v. Owen from LA but it's in the same neighborhood and is another match that fits as a "curiosity."
