Seriously, the longest reigning IC champion against an announcer?

Jerry Lawler.

 

His feud with Bret Hart is one of my most vivid memories of the WWF in the mid-90s. HTM is the longest reigning IC Champion, but I really don't feel he was as a good a heel as Lawler was, when he was at the top of his game.

 

Also, me and Al don't seem to agree on much.

Honky Tonk Man never did anything half as good as the Bret Hart feud of 1993. The Summerslam match with Doink leading into Lawler is an all-time favorite of mine, even if it sucks.

The first year of the Bret feud can't make up for the last half of it (Kiss My Foot match, Issac Yankem DDS, etc.) and the remainder of Lawler's tenure has been offensively bad for the most part.

Damn, another tough one. I liked all the Kaufman shit with Lawler. I liked how Honky would just dip to keep the title though.

also, Lawler in the WWf is an announcer and I think his long-term damage in the color position outweighs any benefit from any feud he had with Doink or Bret Hart.

Lawler had one notable feud with Bret Hart, while Honky had a year and a half of people just WANTING him to lose badly. The Warrior squash was the ultimate payoff, no pun intended.

HTM. Honky was the longest running IC champ ever and was part of the angle that turned Savage face. Lawler had 3 good months of feuding with Bret, followed by two horrible years of repetitive nonsense. Plus, HTM was a better commentator.

Okay, so we can't vote Rikishi over Terry Funk "in good conscience", but we'll throw a one-note gimmick that got pushed over the top over Jerry Lawler? Give me a break. You could have given anybody the Honky Tonk Man push and got similar results - Lawler, despite having most of his better work outside of the WWF, did have a very good feud with Bret Hart. I blame the bookers, rather than Lawler, for the gimmickry that the feud disentegrated into.

I'll wager dollars to donuts that this is not the case.

 

Also, in is short time in the box, HTM was a world's better commentator to Lawler. Honky would actually get the matches and wrestlers over, rather then insinute he'd like to have his way with children.

Lawler's commentary is canceled out by Rhythm 'n Blues, Rockabilly, and the overall stench of Honky Tonk Man's gimmick, in my opinion.

This is kind of tough, because both guys had one good and memorable run in their WWF careers (HTM's IC reign and Lawler's feud with Bret). In my eyes, Lawler is hurt immensly because of his commentary over the last 5 years (he was good at the beginning, but completely fell off the table around 1999 or so), so HTM gets the nod.
