From the Boston Garden. Fun match. They had some really nice stiff back and forth punches and elbows, some cool near falls around the figure four at the end of the match, and some amusing fake Funk selling from Slater. I would be interested to see how much other WWF Slater is available, and I imagine this set will be chock full of Greg Valentine.

Cool match that really locked me in in the last few minutes. Lots of neat stuff, but I was very impressed by Slater. I liked his jab, footrake, and jumping headbutt over the ref as much or more than anything Valentine did and that is high praise. Slater fighting off the figure-four was really well done as also. This was an escalating match that started off solid and by the time it was over it felt like you had watched something really good.

Greg Valentine vs. Dick Slater (Boston 1/3/87)

They circle & Valentine eats a huge chop. Slater keeps at it for a moment before Greg cuts him off by tossing him over the ropes & to the floor. Valentine grounds Slater & goes for the leg. He attempts the figure four but Slater counters into a small package for a near fall. Both men get back to their feet & we have a slugfest. Lots of good strikes in here. Slater throwing jabs is awesome. Slater gets Valentine down for a near fall, but Greg puts his foot on the ropes. Slater sits on the leg still draped over the ropes in response. Awesome! Valentine manages to get back on offense & applies a sleeper. Slater fights out & hits a nice backdrop suplex to get out of it. More strikes in between. Valentine is able to get the figure four on Slater finally. Slater fights it though & turns it around. The crowd loves it. This is shaping up to be really awesome & then Valentine pulls Slater’s tights & rams him into the turnbuckle. The Hammer pins him for the three even though Slater’s feet were on the ropes. Lame finish. That aside, this is a really fun match-up to watch in the WWF & they manage to get the crowd going.

SOLID NOMINATION

At this point in my viewing, I know Valentine is going to bring the goods in every match. Moving forward is really what his opponents can bring to the table or what memorable moment helps you retain the memory of having watched the match. Slater is a great Terry Funk tribute act but nothing he does is uniquely Slater. He has great punches but not patented punches. Terry has patented punches, patented bumping, patented movement and charisma. This match made me think "This is sweet. Imagine if Valentine and Terry Funk squared off."

The crowd got behind this match once Slater took over so that's a positive. Greg really made Slater sympathetic and that's hard to do. The figure four battle was AWESOME. I honestly thought Slater should have passed out in the figure 4. It would have made him more sympathetic. This is a good MIDDLE nomination but I. Couldn't see this in the top 100.
