Posted June 18Jun 18 comment_6031419 RODDY PIPER vs JIMMY SNUKA-NO DQ (05/25/1984; WWF St. Louis Kiel Auditorium; 00:09:34) - This might be the loudest I have heard St. Louis. Lou Thesz is the referee. Piper throws his kilt at Snuka and attacks right away. Just 2 strikes to Piper’s gut and the crowd goes apeshit. Piper bails. The crowd is so loud. Piper in the corner gives Snuka a knee to the nuts. Follow that up with an atomic drop. A knee lift gets a 1 count. Piper and Snuka outside and Jimmy hit with a chair. Inside, Snuka does his leap frog/karate chop combo sending Piper outside and the crowd is wild. Inside, Snuka headbutt and he leaps but Piper moves Thesz in the way and Thesz is out. Superfly gets the Superfly body press and no count. Look, this is Lou fucking Thesz. He shouldn’t be out this long. Piper takes the belt off Thesz and chokes Piper. Thesz gets involved and stops Piper. Piper hits the ref but Snuka has the belt and whips Piper out of the ring. Snuka wins by count out. I loved this match. STRONG NOMINATION.
July 8Jul 8 comment_6032299 Lou Thesz is the guest ref and does a great job of stepping in when needed but not getting in the way (we needed you at Starrcade 83 Lou!). This is a lot of fun, and the crowd is up for this. Piper ends up pulling Thesz in the way and then uses Thesz’s belt to attack Snuka. Later Snuka gets the belt and whips Piper, who flees the ring. Thesz counts out Piper and awards the match to Snuka. Solid nomination and a good baseline. for evaluating the rest of the matches in the feud.
