Disc 1

Masked Assassins vs. Bugsy McGraw & Rufus R. Jones

- On the face side, this was a lot of Jones and McGraw shtick but the actual offense was weak. The Masked Assassins didn't really do anything to distinguish themselves as EVIL~! or as badasses. The ending was abrupt but I wasn't complaining that the match was over.

Kevin Sullivan & Mark Lewin vs. Johnny Weaver & Scott McGhee

- Once again we find ourslees in a position where neither team does anything to distinguish themselves and I am bored two matches in. Lewin's top rope knee to the arm was a nice finisher but we will see Ole do it better on this set. After the match, Lewin goes to town using the foreign object and actually shows some fire that lacked during the entire match.

Harley Race Interview

Abdullah the Butcher vs. Carlos Colon

- Abdullah bleeds in short order and the story is Colon stole Abby's object in order to bust Abby open. However, this wasn't called a No DQ match and the object is in pretty clear view of the ref and he isn't DQed. Nice ref bump as Abby kicks out of a Colon pin and Colon ends up on top of the ref who just counted 2. Abby goes for the big elbow on Colon but he moves and knocks out the ref. Nicely done. Colon gets the advantage and has Abby in the Figure 4 when Huo Savonovich interferes and allows Abby to get the victory. Eh, this isn't my favorite matchup. I won't be voting for it.

Dick Slater & Bob Orton Jr. vs. Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood

- Eh, Youngblood isn't very good. However, Slater had some nice exchanges with him including one that sent Slater over the top rope. Slater and Orton take turns making Youngblood seem like a credible threat early on and they make a great tag team breaking out great offense and signature stooging. Man, I am enjoying the hell out of this match but Youngblood as FIp sucks because if Ricky Steamboat was in that same position, this would have been a match that people actually talked about years later. Wahoo's chops sound freaking vicious. It was no surprise that Youngblood took the fall esp. since he had no business in the ring with the other three. Great heel offense, Wahoo's chops and a cool post-match make this a nomination on my part.

Ric Flair Promo/ Steamboat & Youngblood Promo

Dusty Rhodes Interview w. bad audio

Charlie Brown vs. Great Kabuki

- Brown is Jimmy Valiant. Some brawling outside to start with. Once it gets in the ring though it loses steam as Valiant puts Kabuki in back to back sleepers. Then Kabuki returns the favor with back to back to back Claws. Hell, even 24/7 saw this match was bad and fast forwards it toward the end. An easy NO vote.

Harley Race, Dick Slater & Bob Orton Interview

Dusty Rhodes Interview (I htink this was to fix the earlier interview that fucked up)

Roddy Piper vs. Greg Valentine (Dog Collar Match)

- Easy fucking nomination. Bloody, intriguing, great use of the chain. This rules.

Ric Flair & Wahoo McDaniel Interview

Rocky Kernodle Interview

Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood vs. Jack & Jerry Brisco

- Shit, this match had a great buildup which can be found on my Steamboat comp but I liked the Slater/Orton tag much better. Still, Youngblood and Steamboat had some nice double teams and both Briscos are great sellers. The Briscos offense pales in comparison to the faces but when Brisco had Steamboat as FIP, you could tell the difference in interest compared to younglbood in the earlier tag. This will make a set but it shouldn't be the most popular tag of the night.

Charlie Brown Interview

Rody Piper Interview (Easy Extra)

Steamboat & Youngblood Interview

Dusty Rhodes Interview in the audience

Star Spangled Banner

Ric Flair vs. Harley Race (Cage match)

- This is one of those matches you have to include but it isn't one of my favorite matches from either guy. You had the obligatory blood, great moves from both guys and the focus on the bad leg but I think the match may have gone too long. Cut ten minutes form it, lose Angelo Mosca as ref and this match becomes so much better. I'll nominate it and we'll include it but I am not excited about it.

Rufus R. Jones & Bugsy McGraw vs. The Assassins

Of course Hercules is Assassin #2 here. The fans are hot for the opener that helps out for sure especially for good ol Rufus. The Assassins had been running roughshot over jobber teams on TV leading up to this so it's a change of pace watching the babyfaces totally dominate Assassin #2 to start then Assassin #1 keying on both men's left arms. The Assassins went to Rufus' eyes to get the advantage but Rufus was able to get to Bugsy who came in cleaning house but Bugsy would get schoolboyed quickly by Assassin #1 who wasn't the legal man and the match was over. Okay for what it was.

Next we get a very young Tony Schiavone in the babyface dressing room which sees Roddy Piper wearing a New Japan Pro Wrestling shirt talking with Flair.

Mark Lewin & Kevin Sullivan vs. Scott McGhee & Johnny Weaver

The heels are managed by Gary Hart and are way more subdued than they were in Florida months earlier. Lewin & Sullivan work over McGhee fierce to start and keep him away from Weaver in the other corner. McGhee would finally get to Weaver who would run wild with a bulldog headlock but would get countered on his other attempt and the heels started working him over with quick tags. Lewin would finish him off with a big diving kneedrop onto Weaver's shoulder to win. McGhee attacked the heels and Gary Hart afterwards before getting destroyed by Lewin's golden spike. McGhee is juicing like a madman as Lewin goes to town on him before Angelo Mosca shows up and Lewin attacks Mosca's arm with the spike. The postmatch is really fun as McGhee is a complete mess.

Then we get Barbara Clary interviewing fans before Schiavone is hanging in the heels locker room with Harley Race, Jack & Jerry Brisco, & Greg Valentine which is a fun visual as they are all sitting around on a couch.

Abdullah the Butcher vs. Carlos Colon

Solie as the match starts puts over an angle saying this match was banned in Puerto Rico and the only place they could have such a match was at Starrcade which is hilarious. Abby starts teeing off on Colon who is wearing white for the bloodshed early on before Carlos took Abby's fork and used it on Abby before biting his head which brings out the blood. Colon is vicious here working over Abby's wounds and after a ref bump, Colon locks on the figure-four leglock before Hugo Savinovich runs out and jumps Colon allowing Abby to get free and pin Colon. Yeah there was blood and some fun action but this was a total disappointment.

Next we get Schiavone interviewing an angry Mosca with his bleeding arm who is sitting besides McGhee on the couch who is still bleeding like crazy....What a visual this is.

Barbara Clary then interviews some female fans who love them some Ric Flair.

Bob Orton Jr. & Dick Slater vs. "Chief" Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood

Slater is all about the bumping and hemming & hawwing early in the match before tagging in Orton who is all business using a huge backbreaker on Mark but to his credit Mark fights back and has the heels worried. Orton though would catch Mark in a side backbreaker after tagging in Slater who dropped an elbow on his head and Slater followed up with some roughhousing. Mark is chunked to the floor where Orton would work him over including dropping him back first on the railing before Wahoo runs him off. Orton & Slater now take turns punishing Mark before Slater would try for a piledriver which was countered by Mark with a backdrop allowing him to get the hot tag to Wahoo. Orton & Slater take turns now bumping and selling for Wahoo who is a house of fire until Orton tripped up Wahoo before tagging Slater in. Wahoo was in the heels corner and even when he fought back he got attacked by Orton and now we get a double FIP section. Orton drops some hard knees on Wahoo's head before tagging in Slater who accidentally hits him allowing the babyfaces to make their comeback forcing a 4-way brawl. Wahoo is sent to the floor and Mark fights off the heels with dropkicks before Wahoo takes Slater down him him. Mark would miss a dropkick before eating a Superplex by Orton for the finish although Wahoo broke it up too early making it look bad. Both teams continued to fight after the match and Slater would come off the top step on Wahoo's arm with Orton following off the top rope which was a wild bump. This was a fine match even though it felt clunky at times but there is enough on here to get a low-end nomination.

Then we get Schiavone interviewing Flair sitting with Steamer & Jay Youngblood talking about what is going on later in the night.

Next we get Barbara Clary trying to interview Dusty Rhodes but the microphone keeps going in and out.

NWA World TV Title vs. Mask: The Great Kabuki © vs. Charlie Brown

Brown of course is Jimmy Valiant. This started off hot with Brown taking it to Kabuki including crotching him onto the ringpost before going to his sleeper hold twice and this is basically a squash until Gary Hart helped Kabuki get to the ropes allowing him to get free. Kabuki comes back with his iron claw taking it Brown and the crowd is hot for everything but it just isn't that good. Solie saying that Hart could lose $200,000 a year if Kabuki lost was a great line. Brown would finally make a comeback and he would hit his big diving elbow drop to win the title. The match had great heat but again it wasn't very good.

Then we get Schiavone back in the heel locker room with Orton, Slater, & Race talking about the bounty on Flair as well as taking out Wahoo.

Next we get Dusty Rhodes finally able to speak with Barbara Clary and he challenges the winner of Flair/Race for a shot at the title.

Dog Collar Match: Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine

This is the culmination of a year-long feud that was awesome and this match was a perfect end to the feud. This was a unique bloody match with lots of heat and violent action that showed how much hatred there was between the two men. The chain was a serious weapon which was the intent and the psychology about going for the injured ear on Piper was great. Piper's comeback was great and so was the finish making this a slam dunk nomination.

Next we get Schiavone with Flair and an injured Wahoo vowing revenge on Orton & Slater as well as Race.

Barbara Clary interviews a returning Don Kernodle at ringside next and he says that the tag match is going to be a great match and he said that he wants Flair to beat Race surprisingly.

NWA World Tag Titles - SR: Angelo Mosca: Jack & Jerry Brisco © vs. Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood

This was a damn good wrestling match with everyone looking really good especially Steamboat. The Briscos were such a great team and I was always a fan of their style of wrestling as it was just so different. I did feel bad for these guys as they had to follow the dog collar match but they held their own. Mosca would get involved of course but it really didn't affect the finish that much although the Briscos would get revenge after the match. Solid nomination.

Schiavone is back in the babyface locker room interviewing Charlie Brown about winning the TV Title and a beatup Roddy Piper who was awesome talking shit on Valentine. Steamer & Youngblood then walk in after winning the titles to celebrate their victory as well.

Barbara Clary is back with Dusty Rhodes surrounded by women who all want Flair to win.

Steel Cage Match for the NWA World Heavyweight Title: Harley Race © vs. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair

Gene Kiniski was the ref, Mosca was the ref for the tag titles match. I'm with Will here in that this isn't their best match but it is a very historical match as this was the main event of the first big show by JCP that could've been a huge bomb. I wonder what Race's mindset was here since he had just been offered a shitload of money by Vince to come to the WWF with the NWA title. There was great crowd heat here and Flair juiced but Kiniski wasn't a really good ref. The cute thing about the finish was that Flair hit the move that he never hits as a heel that would become a big spot for him 20 years later. Definite nomination.
