Posted December 14, 200717 yr comment_5425231 Dick Murdoch vs. Dr. Death Steve Williams - Really good match and comparable to their UWF matchups. These guys brawl outside, Dick uses weapons, Gilbert is a general pain in the ass and you get a relatively clean ending. Murdoch and Eddie are upset at the decision and get back in the ring but Doc cleans house. It's too bad that the NWA didn't feature this match on thier TV. Instead they released a subpar matchon the 1987 GAB tape and they had a rather lackluster match (IIRC) on TV. Of course I am going to nominate this.
December 14, 200717 yr comment_5425258 Shouldn't this honestly be on the UWF set, if we are putting on post Watts UWF TV matches, it wasn't like they were running shows on their own at that point. The TV was setting up the UWF matches on the Great American Bash's. I personally think all of the post Watts UWF should be on the NWA set, but if the TV goes on the Watts this probably should too.
December 14, 200717 yr comment_5425264 This was actually on an NWA show, though. I would say this would go on the UWF set if it was promoted as a UWF show, which is why the TV stuff from the same time frame would be included and this wouldn't.
December 14, 200717 yr Author comment_5425273 Right... that would be like saying that the Nick Bockwinkle matches that took place should be on an AWA show even though they were running Houston.
December 15, 200717 yr comment_5425276 Okay. Was all the other stuff from post Watts UWF on UWF shows? Wasn't Bubba v. Doc on a Bash too? Wasn't the Superdome match between Doc v. Murdoch on a Bash show?
December 15, 200717 yr Author comment_5425277 Sure, for the bash match, it was a featured match on an NWA show. You have NWA title matches featured in Japan in All Japan. You have Flair vs. Kerry IN MID SOUTH and neither was a featured Mid South performer at the time. However, you said it yourself... we should put matches in their host territory. For the Mid South set, it would be as logical or illogical to remove the Boesch promoted matches from the set. In fact, if we are having a Texas category, shouldn't the Houston matches all be moved to the Texas category?
December 15, 200717 yr comment_5425280 Okay well what does that mean about the other post sale Watts matches from Bash shows? Are all the matches we nominated from UWF shows, or are there also some featured Bash matches? I just think we should be consistent.
December 15, 200717 yr Author comment_5425282 The way I understood it, and the way I have been trying to remain consistent is that if it was on a UWF show (Jim Ross and Magnum announcing) then it goes on the UWF show. If it is a Schiavone match or show, it goes on the NWA. That is why I think you are wrong not to include the Garvin match. However, no one else has nominated it and I'll have to look at what disc it is on to watch it. For this Dr. Death-Murdoch match, it was clearly an NWA show hat had some featured UWF talent. The mat said NWA, the main event was NWA. There are no announcers but it was an NWA show. However, Crockett was still booking UWF-centric shows at the time as Kris pointed out in another thread. I think the reality is that late 1987 is as much part of Mid South/UWF history as it is part of NWA history. We are witnessing the sad death of our beloved promotion and one of the reminders is that the new owner is using OUR show to feature outside talent in the hopes that us Watts fans will attach to THEIR talent. It is ok that a Dr. Death-Dick Murdoch match appears on two sets because it shows the history of both promotions. It is ok that Dusty Rhodes appears on UWF TV, Florida TV and World Wide Wrestling at the same time because it is a perfect illustration of what was going on at the time, and it is ok if Dusty ends up on all three sets. It was one of the reaons I opposed the omission of Dynamite Kid-Tiger Mask from MSG because it was clearly a WWF show with a featured guest match. THAT is what promotions do. In World class and Memphis, we are using home turf as a basis for separating them even though they are co-promoting. I don't mind that. On the AWA set, Kerry vs. Lawler will appear and it is a Memphis wrestler vs. a World Class wrestler. When Lawler wins the AWA title, it will appear on the Memphis set. When Kerry wins the NWA title, that match could end up on the World Class set (even though I don't think it will be nominated). The point is every set has the potential of driving us crazy except, even lucha.... does the Santo-Casas match from LOS ANGELES go in lucha or Other???? Really, when I watch Nikita vs. Taylor at Starrcade, I think NWA. When I watch Lightnign Express vs. Midnight Express (all Crockett talent), I think UWF because that is what the promotion was at the time. Hell, I think one of the great things about the project is discovering where outside talent was popping up at. If the Mid South set has Dusty, Flair, Bockwinkel, Big Bubba, Kerry, Chris Adams, The Fabulous Ones, and Ted Dibiase ... well fucking A!!! How great is that?
May 9, 20169 yr comment_5752061 Dick Murdoch vs Steve Williams Doc's cast can't be used as a weapon. We get a brawl to start. Doc post's Dickies arm and goes to work on it. I'm enjoying Doc's arm work. I've never seen the Memphis pump handle done like that. Doc is a stud. Doc is even busting out some Backlund row row row the boat spots. Loved Gilbert's misdirection with the ref to allow Dick to use the branding Iron on Doc's arm. Now Dick is going after the arm/cast. Dick can work a body part with the best of them. Another misdirection and another mugging. These guys were so good at getting the crowd. Easy Nomination. NWA HH 7/25/87
May 16, 20169 yr comment_5752986 This was a JCP show with UWF guys....... "Dr. Death" Steve Williams vs. "Capt. Redneck" Dick Murdoch They announced before the match that Doc couldn't use his cast although he could wear it. Doc spent the early part of the match working over Murdoch's left arm as revenge for him injuring his own. Gilbert would get on the apron distracting the referee so Murdoch could use Gilbert's cane as a weapon on Doc's injured left arm. The armwork here is really good as Murdoch would use holds plus the cane again as a weapon while playing total chickenshit to the crowd. Murdoch goes for the Brainbuster but Doc countered with a suplex of his own which saw Murdoch do a Curly Howard sell job. Doc comes firing back now and Murdoch is hilarious in his selling for Doc's punches and the crowd is going nuts for Doc who runs through Murdoch once before eating a big shot. Doc would hit Murdoch though with his cast as Murdoch came off the top rope when the referee wasn't looking to win the match which was a cute finish. Doc then beats down Gilbert & Murdoch after the match. Very fun match and I'll pass it on as a nomination.
