Posted December 14, 200717 yr comment_5425240 Maple Leaf #2 Johnny Weaver encounter w/ Lord Alfred Hayes & Russians Ivan Koloff vs. Ron Bass (EXTRA) - Ends in pull-apart brawl after a couple of minutes of fighting. Paul Jones & Jake Roberts vs. Ole Anderson & The Grappler - OK match, not great. I'll have to rewatch to see if this was 2/3 falls and incomplete or if a different match followed and the first fall was complete. Ron Bass & Johnny Weaver vs. The Russians (Nikolai Volkoff & Kris Markoff) - Russians dispose of Weaver. Ivan Koloff vs. Ron Bass - I have seen Bass in wild brawls and some crappy matches so you never know what you are going to get. This match has Ivan winning in short order after nailing Bass with his boot. Since this didn't last very long I wished they would have just opened up with a bloody brawl. Instead they took their time before going with the foreign object finish. Vince McMahon interviews Andre the Giant Jimmy Valiant Music Video (“Boy from New York City”) Jimmy Valiant vs. ??? Ivan Koloff vs. Paul Jones (JIP) - Ole Anderson and Ricky Steamboat get involved in the end. Ole & Gene Anderson vs. Jake the Snake Roberts & Jay Youngblood (JIP) - not much is shown. Sgt. Slaughter Interview (attacks Keith Larson) Harley Race vs. Johnny Weaver - Weaver is a jobber. Vince McMahon interviews Adonis, Ventura, Fuji Adrian Adonis & Jesse Ventura vs. Tony Parisi & Dominic Denucci - This would be where Kris was making his point about including Maple Leaf under Canada. Considering the small amount of WWF/AWA featured and the large amount of NWA Maple Leaf available, I stand by my original stance that it should be included under the NWA banner. Jimmy Valiant vs. Mike Miller - Phil was talking Mike Miller up the other day as the World's Greatest Wrestler. I wasn't buying it. Vince McMahon interviews Adonis & Ventura Jimmy Valiant sit-down interview/ Jimmy Valiant Song “World’s Greatest Wrestler” (EXTRA) Vince McMahon interviews Patterson, Adonis & Ventura Jimmy Valiant vs. Joe White - Squash Jimmy Valiant vs. Jesse Ventura - What a horrible matchup. Ricky Steamboat vs. Roddy Piper (5:37) - Pretty action packed match that Steamboat wins in about 5 minutes but way too short for me to consider nomination.
June 12, 201312 yr comment_5547662 This starts with Lord Alfred Hayes trying to buy Johnny Weaver and it ends up with him tearing up the check and running from Chris Markoff & Nikolai Volkoff. (November 1981) NWA World TV Title: Cowboy Ron Bass © vs. "Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff (November 1981) Bass takes Jim Dalton's spot and puts his title on the line so Koloff jumps him from the start and it takes Bass going to the floor grabbing a chair getting DQed to get Koloff down. Chris Markoff & Nikolai Volkoff jumped in afterwards to help Ivan which turns into a wild pull-apart brawl. "Number One" Paul Jones & Jake "The Snake" Roberts vs. Ole Anderson & Super Destroyer (October 1981) Grappler is on commentary here so you can believe he will get involved. Some good back and forth action here with everyone getting some offense in working at a fast pace. Fun seeing Jones & Super D work against each other after the heated Mr. Florida feud a year earlier. Jake is really fun here getting fired up throwing fast punches on Super D's head. Super D though would go for the Superplex but Jake counters with a punch then hits his kneelift off the middle rope in a great spot for a nearfall. Jake then goes for the Super D's mask and rips it off before Grappler could get the towel on his head and you get a nice look at Scott Irwin's face before Jake cradles him up to get the win. Very fun sprint here and I'm throwing it up a low-end pick. Next we get promos from Mulligan & Jake about their match with Grappler & Super D at MLG on 12/27. Then we get clips of another Jones/Jake vs. Ole/Super D match from TV. Cowboy Ron Bass & Johnny Weaver vs. Chris Markoff & Nikolai Volkoff (November 1981) Not a whole lot going on here other than some great body hair on Markoff & Weaver. This goes to a DQ with Lord Alfred Hayes jumping in the ring. Next we get clips of another Bass/Ivan match from a house show with no commentary. Fun for what it was. Then we get Vince McMahon running down the MLG card from 12/27 which is great and a promo from Blassie about the Stretcher Match with Andre with clips of them assaulting Andre while he was on crutches. Next we get the Jimmy Valiant Boy From New York City video from Memphis. "Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant vs. Ali Bey (November 1981) Easy win for Valiant. Then we get a promo from Big John Studd about his cage match with Angelo Mosca at MLG on 1/17/82. Next we get clips of Koloff/Jones which I've seen in full. Then we get clips of The Minnesota Wrecking Crew vs. Jake Roberts/Jay Youngblood from TV in November 1981. Fun match I wish we had in full. Next we get a beatdown from Sgt. Slaughter on Keith Larsen after he already beat him in a match. Harley Race vs. Johnny Weaver (November 1981) Weaver is towards the end of his run here but he is still a good opponent for someone like Race on TV. There is some clipping here as well. Then we get another Vince cameo with East-West Connection about making their debut at MLG. Next we get Steamer & Piper brawling after a squash match with Ole and babyface Ray Stevens joining in. Vince returns again with a promo from Mr. Fuji about making his return to MLG and a promo from the East-West Connection about the Cadillac Cup. Then we get a promo from Valiant about the Cadillac Cup. The East-West Connection (Adrian Adonis & Jesse "The Body" Ventura) vs. The Italian Connection ("Dynamite" Dominic DeNucci & Tony "Cannonball" Parisi) (1/17/82) This is the debut of the East-West in Toronto and the crowd is into them in both ways. Adonis is fun here bumping and selling for the Italians making them look credible as they were past their prime here. Ventura came in and the quality dropped big. Next we get promos from Piper & Slaughter who have a little tension here about the Cadillac Cup. "Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant vs. Mike Miller (December 1981) Easy win for Valiant. Then we get another promo by Piper about the Cadillac Cup. Next we get the return of Vince and promos from the East-West Connection about the Cadillac Cup. Then we get a personality profile with Jimmy Valiant & Les Thatcher in Knoxville and this is great stuff. This should be an extra somewhere. Next we get a promo from Piper about the MLG show on 2/21. Then we get promos from Austin Idol, Piper, Pat Patterson, & East-West about the Cadillac Cup. "Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant vs. Joe White (February 1982) Squash. Next we get a promo from Studd about the Cadillac Cup. Cadillac Cup - Finals: "Boogie Woogie Man" Jimmy Valiant vs. Jesse "The Body" Ventura (3/7/82) This is from MLG and a rare matchup for sure. Clipped up and not very good. Cadillac Cup - Quarterfinals: Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Ricky Steamboat (3/7/82) This is from MLG and JIP after the intro not sure how much is missing but it starts with Piper working over Steamer. Piper is relentless here taking it to Steamer but Steamer is fun in his hope spots then makes a fun comeback where he pins Piper. Then we get a promo from Studd about his Bunkhouse match with Mulligan at MLG on 3/21.
