Posted December 16, 200717 yr comment_5425363 Ricky Steamboat vs. Terry Funk - This was a nice bix of brawling and wrestling with Funk unloading with his punches and Steamboat not afraid to go outside and brawl with Funk. In one spot, Steamboat has Funk in a bodyslam position and just bodyslams him from the ring to the outside. What I really appreciate is that both guys kept the over-selling and comedy to a minimum. After Steamboat was piledriven on the outside, you thought it would end in countout or be over at that point but these guys continued with some great back and forth action until Funk gets DQed for whacking Steamboat over the head with a microphone. The post-match was pretty great with Lex Luger coming to "save" Steamboat only to attack Steamboat. Easy nomination and a great match.
December 22, 200717 yr comment_5425743 Really terrific match with an awesome post-match that's one of the better heels turns you'll ever see. The interview from TBS the Saturday before where Funk calls Steamboat's son a "half breed, pig-nosed little snot" should be included as an extra. The whole segment was great, with Luger interrupting the promo, which was pre-taped, to cut an awesome promo about how frustrated he was with Flair, Steamboat and Funk for pretty much swallowing the world title picture whole.
July 17, 200916 yr comment_5442059 I changed my mind on liking this. The piledriver sidelined Ric Flair and Funk has been using it to destroy jobbers. Steamboat takes two piledrivers, including one on the arena floor, and still fights back and evens things up within a couple of minutes. Just not really that good of a match. Still, the post-match angle with Luger turning on Steamboat is one of my favorite angles of all time. Kinda needs to go on because of rep, but not really that good.
November 11, 201014 yr comment_5458222 Loss is crazy, this is a great match. Funk is just a bump freak as he is flinging himself over the top rope recklessly. I also loved Funks nutty offense, he was such an amazing wrestler in 1989. Heel turn by Luger is great too. Slam Dunk
November 11, 201014 yr comment_5458227 Yeah this is one of the best matches of Funk's 89 run and to be honest I don't think it's much "worse" than the Flair/Steamboat or Flair/Funk matches from that year. Funk's diving splash onto Steamboat's head and neck is awesome.
November 25, 201014 yr comment_5458670 All the talk about Race using the piledriver as a transition move, and the piledriver being built up as a killer in 1989, and Steamboat takes two and is okay and you don't have a problem? I'm fine with anyone liking this match, as there is some good stuff, but I'd love to hear that defended.
November 26, 201014 yr comment_5458709 Funk used the piledriver as a transition spot in quite a few of his bouts. I remember a bout from Puerto Rico with Windham where Windham took quite a few. I'm sure he did it in ECW, and I remember him using it as a transition move against Bullet Bob from SMW. Heck even at the GAB Funk used it as a great nearfall in the bout.In 89 the piledriver needed to be protected big time coming off the angle with Flair. He did piledrive Flair through a table to start the feud. With that said the bout is a damn good one.
November 26, 201014 yr comment_5458710 Funk's diving splash onto Steamboat's head and neck is awesome. I've always been a mark for that spot if someone is working the neck. I loved it when Billy Robinson did it in the 70's, to Dory/Brisco working the spot into their bouts to Buddy Rose doing the spot in some of his many classics. I've always wondered why we don't see that spot much if at all now a days.
