Posted December 21, 200718 yr comment_5425702 Disc 1 Eddie Gilbert vs. ??? - Didn't watch Dick Murdoch vs. Butch Reed - A far cry from their Mid South classics. Maybe it is just me but it seems like everything was moving in slow motion. They hit thier spots well, the match had a decent structure but it seemed so slow. Watch the match and tell me what you think. Michael Hayes vs. Joey Maggs - This doesn't last long. Sting vs. Kendall Windham - I think this was around the time they were trying to associate Kendall with the Horsemen. Anyway, a pretty good match but not quite nomination material in my book. Kevin Sullivan vs. Rick Steiner - Early on, they work a headlock in and out of the ring. When Sullivan gets control, he starts stomping on Steiner's hand. The remainder of this part saw Sullivan working over the hand. At one point, Steiner tries to shrug him off and puts his hand in his singlet so Sullivan lays some blows to the hand inside the singlet. This was going along just fine but Steiner didn't really bring the high-end offense and the finish was pretty weak. It ends after Sullivan charges the corner, Steiner moves and gets a quick roll-up. It sucks because Sting won the last match with a quick-roll-up as well. Another good match but not a nomination. Barry Windham vs. Lex Luger (12:50) - Similar to their PPV match that ends with another quick pin. I think I liked the PPV match better and I don't think we need both. Disc 2 Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat - I love Steamboat vs. Flair. Seriously, I keep going into these matches ready to criticize and tear them apart but the fan in me just wants to enjoy the match. Really, if we include matches from the entire decade, there could be 6 matches of this matchup alone. The great thing about the handheld matches... every one of them build and build until the crowd is insane during the final stretch. They don't really do any new spots. They don't do any crazy moves. Hell, some of the spots are move for move from other matches but when you have a near-perfect formula for building a match, no need to deviate too much. Also, watching the house show, it reminds you how much these guys put in to shows that were never meant to be taped. The scary thing is they did a double shot on this day and both matches rock. I'll get tothe Philly match later but the Landover one is a slam-dunk nomination.
April 21, 20169 yr comment_5746659 Flair vs Steamboat Maryland This is a high end nomination. What an amazing match . The crowd is with Flair to start. Steamboat stands up to Flair with a slap and has the crowd the rest of the way . Matsuda even looked good here. They have a lot more heelFace stuff here and really makes a great match. This has a chance for my #1. Flair's work on Steamboat's leg was phenomenal and Steamboat's selling is off the charts. Just great stuff. Use this disc Eaton/Cornette vs Rose/Paul E Pre match promos back and forth are great. This was entertaining enough. I'll pass on it though.
July 3, 20178 yr comment_5805824 NWA World Heavyweight Title: Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat © vs. "Nature Boy" Ric Flair (3/18/89) This is simply amazing and one for the ages....the Capital Centre was rockin and rollin as the match went on and both men put it all out there. Grand Slam nomination no doubt and right there in the conversation for the #1 spot.
