Posted December 21, 200717 yr comment_5425704 Superbouts 3 Midnight Express vs. Ron Garvin & Barry Windham - I thought this was going to start off slow but when Eaton backs Garvin into the corner, Eaton gets a tag but GArvin bails outside. Well, when Eaton goes to chase Garvin, he gets popped with a Garvin punch. Great sequence. After that, all hell breaks loose and the MX get popped with a shoe and Cornette's racquet. After that, it slows down a bit but these two teams have great chemistry. This was just getting hot when the MX decide they had enough and bail on the match. I am torn on this match. On one hand, we get ten minutes of great action but on the other hand, because of the finish, it feels like the match was incomplete. I am completely on the fence. Rock N Roll Express vs. Ragin’ & Ravishin’ (JIP) (Phantom Title Change) - The arena clip that shows the RNR getting the belts even if it had happened months before and was a false finish in the arena. Nikita Koloff vs. Ivan Koloff (Russian Chain Match) - Man, I thought this would be more vicious than it actually was. They spend more time working the 4 corner angle than just beating the shit out of each other. I was disappointed. Tully Blanchard vs. Todd Champion - Blanchard gives him a little more than if this was an episode of Worldwide or something but easily disposes of Champion. Barry Windham vs. Big Bubba - This was criminally short. Another match that ended before it really got going. Fabulous Freebirds vs. Sting, Eddie Gilbert & Rick Steiner - See above.
June 1, 20169 yr comment_5755517 US Tag Titles: The Midnight Express ("Beautiful" Bobby Eaton & "Sweet" Stan Lane) © vs. "Hands of Stone" Ronnie Garvin & Barry Windham (6/2/87)Ronnie just fucking nails Eaton as he tried to go after him on the floor and this was a fun way to start the match. Garvin would then chase Cornette into the ring where he lost his shoe and racquet which the faces used a weapons right in front of Tommy Young who didn't call for a DQ as he just warned them. Garvin then pours a beer in Cornette's shoe which was used on Bobby's head twice. This is fun schtick going on here and the fans are loving it. Eaton comes firing back with some great punches of his own but it's going to take more than that to get Garvin. Precious comes down to ringside as Windham is in the ring working over Lane and she tells Garvin something which makes him smile. Windham looks good before Cornette jabs him with the racquet which allows the MX to take control and they were very adept at working him over. Windham would eventually crawl over to Garvin for the hot tag and he cleans house on the MX throwing some bombs with Eaton pinballing like crazy. Cornette would come in the ring and Tommy Young called for the DQ and the babyfaces would clean house. This was a fun match but that finish was terrible and we have better from these teams so I'm going no on a nomination. Then we get clips of the phantom title change between the RnR and Ragin & Ravishing.Russian Chain Match: "Russian Nightmare" Nikita Koloff vs. "Russian Bear" Ivan Koloff (5/26/87)Ivan would get the best of Nikita early in the match using the chain to bloody him up although the focus on actual work wasn't long as both men were trying to touch all the corners quickly when they could. Ivan would climb up top and Nikita jerked him down using the chain then he gave Ivan a crotch shot which kickstarts his comeback where he used the chain on Ivan's head to bring out the juice from him. Ivan tries to run away but Nikita pulls him right into the ringpost then brings him back in the ring for more punishment. Nikita would try and hit Ivan with the chain but he hit Tommy Young instead putting him down. Ivan then touches 3 corners but he trips over Tommy and pushes him before Nikita nailed him with the Russian Sickle. Nikita then drug Ivan around the ring touching all four corners to win. This had blood yes but it lacked enough of a spark to warrant a nomination.NWA World TV Title: Tully Blanchard © vs. Todd Champion (6/2/87)Champion gets quite a bit of offense in here but Tully would take advantage of a missed diving elbow then took the match with the Slingshot Suplex. Champion looked very strong here.UWF Heavyweight Title: Big Bubba Rogers © vs. Barry Windham (6/6/87)Windham comes out blazing to start throwing some bombs on Bubba who bumps hard from the ring to the floor with Barry following him down throwing shots. Windham would slam Bubba but he banged up his knee afterwards and Bubba used that to start pounding on Windham inside and outside the ring busting Barry open in the process. Bubba would go for a piledriver but Barry would backdrop him over the top rope to the floor with Bubba crashing down hard which for a dude his size was something else. Barry then followed him down bringing him back in the ring where he could work him over even hitting a backdrop suplex for a nearfall then a vertical suplex. Windham would then go for the lariat but Akbar would trip him up for the DQ. Windham would hit Bubba though sending him outside. Man this was starting to pick up good but that finish stopped it dead in it's tracks. The Fabulous Freebirds (Terry "Bamm Bamm" Gordy & Michael "PS" Hayes) vs. Rick Steiner & Sting (6/6/87)This is Sting & Steiner's first appearance in Greensboro and Hayes whips the crowd in a frenzy before the match talking about kicking some ass. This is one of the final times that Sting worked heel and it was fun watching him stooging around. The match was fine nothing special as the Birds looked strong to start then the heels got the heat on Hayes before Sting crotched himself by mistake on the top rope allowing Gordy to get the hot tag. Gordy runs wild before it turns into a 4-way brawl. Gilbert then tries to help with a clothesline off the top rope but he hit Sting instead and Gordy covered to win.
January 25, 20178 yr comment_5785218 Midnight Express vs. Ron Garvin & Barry Windham That punch from Garvin to Eaton on the floor was amazing. Lane now does a great job selling a Garvin punch. Faces standing tall in the ring. The shine is them just beating on the MX. Cornette sets up the heat. Like the heat on Windham targeting the back. Nice cut off of the tag by Eaton. Eaton putting jis weight on Barry. The crowd 100% behind Barry. Hot tag to Garvin. Punches, noggin knocker, This was good, but we have way better from this match up. Everything else I'm with you guys.
