Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Title vs. $10,000: Roddy Piper © vs. Jack Brisco (7/7/82)

 

We are at WCPQ Studios in Charlotte where Piper has been dodging Brisco for weeks demanding him to put up $10,000 to get a shot so he gets the money with help from Steamboat & Wahoo forcing Piper’s hand. Piper & Jack have a great amateur exchange early on showing that Piper could hold his own on the mat with the legendary Brisco but Piper would start pulling hair to get the advantage so Brisco threw him to the floor. Jack would level Piper with a great clothesline before taking him down with a headlock for a nearfall. Brisco really works that headlock and Piper uses some methods to get him to release it but Brisco is a bulldog keeping it on. The crowd is eating this up as Piper starts banging Brisco’s head into the turnbuckle but he won’t release the headlock. This is true old school psychology where guys would work a headlock for 30 minutes at a time. Piper would finally get out though with a perfect backdrop suplex forcing Jack to release and Piper slaps himself to wake up by just leveling Jack with strikes before going to a front chancery. Piper has slapped himself bloody and Brisco gets out of the front chancery then starts punching at Piper’s left leg before Piper chunks Brisco to the floor where they would exchange blows. The action goes back to the ring where Piper would duck a punch and locked in the sleeper that Brisco would fight out of by using his own backdrop suplex. Brisco would then lock in the Weaver Lock variation of the sleeper that Piper sells awesomely but Piper uses the hair to get out of it. Brisco would bang Piper’s head into the turnbuckle a few times before a slugfest breaks out with Brisco sending Piper to the floor. Piper would go to his trunks and he nailed Brisco with a roll of coins that flew all over the ring then pins him for the victory. Piper then cuts a great promo after the match. This was a fantastic match and I don’t know what Will was smoking when he watched this. Definite nomination as both men looked great especially Jack.

I'd call it a Low end nomination. The pre match segment was awesome. I loved the amateur wrestling. Piper's hair pull escape was a thing of beauty. I dug all the headlock work . I also was a fan of the finish . Overall some good stuff and a Low end nomination.
