Let's see if the handful of WMC shows from '89 that I got from Memphis job guy Tim Hall yield anything interesting (even if it's also on the Evansville set). This show had a bunch of awesome late '80s commercials, including Mac Tonight and Eddie & The Cruisers II.

Freddy is Tommy Gilbert, right? You know Lawler's booking when there are movie monsters and one of them is a babyface based on a child molesting character (well, before the script was changed).

It's an expiration of time match (as I suspect most studio matches that we consider will be) and Freddy's mask is on the line. I got giddy when I saw that Landel was sans kneepads, as less bumps means more shtick, and it was indeed shticky to the the Nth degree. Buddy hid an invisible foreign object that never came into play, Ronnie P. Gossett repeatedly held Freddy on the ropes while Landel hit him, Freddy went to the locker room (in the most animated way possible) to get Lawler as an equalizer, Freddie stomping around, and other things that got the crowd really hot in spite of their being no bumps until the last minute of the match, where each wrestler took one. Freddy was about to win when Gossett broke up the pin for the DQ, triggering run-ins by Lawler, Wildside, Jason, and Eddie Marlin. Highlight of the post-match brawl was Gossett's really awesome selling for Marlin's punches. Not a great match, but a fun one that's worth a look for how Memphisy it is.

Freddy’s mask on the line: Nightmare Freddy (Tommy Gilbert) vs. “Nature Boy” Buddy Landell (8/12/89)

Landell is so awesome here as a chickenshit heel and his fiddling around with his “foreign object” is great. Freddy is sick of Gossett holding him so Landell can pop him so he brings Lawler out to counter Gossett. Lawler then holds Landell in the corner so Freddy can get his shots in. Freddy would get the claw on Landell leading to Gossett running in for the DQ and a wild brawl breaks out featuring Jason scaring everyone. I loved this and fuck it should go on the set.
