Ole Anderson vs. Jerry Roberts (Jacques Rougeau) (11/8/80)

Ole squashes Jacques under his American alias. Ole squashes always looked like it hurt the other guy a whole lot but Jacques shows fire here. Tony Atlas cuts a tremendous promo on Ole after the match accusing Ole of being racist so of course Ole destroys the award that Atlas “won” for being black athlete of the year. This was great stuff.

National Tag Titles: The Fabulous Freebirds (Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy & Buddy Roberts) © vs. Mike Davis & Kevin Sullivan (11/8/80)

This is the famous Austin Idol four flat tires angle and I have all the promos and buildup from this week of TV and the week before. The match wasn’t great but it’s one of the best studio matches of the era and so memorable that it is a definite extra although I could see it being an actual nomination. Gordy destroying Davis with his early powerbomb was awesome.

National TV Title: Terry Taylor © vs. Terry Funk (October 1980)

This is an extremely rare match from the Columbus Championship Wrestling studio show which after they taped the show at TBS studios, the crews would split and would tape in either Columbus or Macon afterwards before going to house shows that night. Taylor was just a rookie here and was getting a big push feuding with guys like Funk & Ole Anderson at this time. Taylor would work a headlock in and out of the ring with Funk getting a backdrop suplex counter in the ring but when he tried it on the floor Taylor took him down. Taylor keeps the headlock on but Funk would finally get out of it and would chunk Taylor to the floor so he can get a rest then starts peppering Taylor with punches after he gets in the ring. Taylor comes back with punches of his own and tries a monkey flip out of the corner but Funk holds the top rope. Funk would then use 3 headbutts but Taylor would go back to the side headlock but Funk would drop down and put his feet on the ropes to get the pin and won the title. The match isn’t bad but the VQ is.

“The Universal Heartthrob” Austin Idol & Kevin Sullivan vs. Bobby Garrett & Roger Mason (11/15/80)

Squash.

Steve Keirn & Terry Taylor vs. Charlie Fulton & Stan Lane (11/15/80)

Always fun to watch Keirn and Lane face off before forming the Fabs. This was a good competitive match and Fulton was one of the best jobbers ever as he was a very solid worker and always regarded by the big names to be one of their favorite job guys to face. Keirn wins with the sleeper and challenges Masa Saito after the match for a shot at $5,000 later on.

We get clips from the 11/14 Omni show with Gordy vs. Brisco, Idol/Sullivan vs. Gordy/Roberts and this goes on with the whole angle from the previous weeks as an extra.

$5,000 Challenge: Masa Saito vs. Steve Keirn (11/15/80)

This starts with some good reversals but Saito would hit one of his Saito Suplexes that would get him the advantage although Keirn would come back though with a flying forearm smash for a nearfall. Keirn follows with an inside cradle for another nearfall then a front chancery that Saito would work out of. Saito would then hit a Northern Lights Saito Suplex for another nearfall as Keirn had his foot on the ropes. Keirn would comeback with a pseudo enzuigiri for another nearfall as Saito had his foot on the rope before getting another nearfall with a suplex. Keirn then hits a piledriver for yet another nearfall with Saito getting his foot on the rope before going for the Weaver Lock variation of the sleeper but Saito gets to the ropes and backdrops Keirn over the top rope for the DQ. Keirn wins the match but doesn’t get $5,000 because he didn’t win cleanly. This was a fun little sprint.
