Superbouts 4

Rock N Roll Express vs. Ric Flair & Lex Luger

- Flair vs. Morton is still one of the best matchups ever. Morton vs. Luger is wierd. Here you have Luger selling for Morton, allowing Morton to control with a headlock and even standing his ground after a couple of shoulder blocks. The RNR both get figure fours on the Horsemen in a nice turnaround spot. Gibson plays FIP in this one and the Horsemen work over the leg. What is really surprising about this match is how long the RNR controlled the match. However, the end was satisfying as Morton has Flair rolled up but LUger has the referee held so he doesn't make the count but Luger gives Morton a clothesline to the back of the head and this allows Flair to make a pin... with feet on the ropes for good measure. Good solid tag team action and a nomination.

Midnight Express vs. Barry Windham & Jimmy Garvin

- I think the biggest problem I have withthis feud is that Garvin and Windham are supposed to be avenging the damage inflicted to Ronnie Garvin yet they wrestle as a pretty straight tag. Hell, the Garvin-Dundee vs. Armstrongs match showed more fire. There wasn't anything really great or bad about this match but I don't think it wuld make a final cut.

Rock N Roll Express & Barry Windham vs. Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard & Lex Luger (pre July 4th)

- Nice spot as Ricky Morton gives Arn a drop toe hold and rubs his face in the mat the same way the Horsemen rubbed his face in the concrete. During the shine segment, all three faces give the Hosemen the figure four reminiscent of the earlier match. The match picks up with Morton doing what he does best... getting his ass beat. However, it isn't everyday you see Morton giving someone a DDT. Shit, this was going along well until a bullshit DQ finish. I am on the fence for a nomination. On one hand, everything played out perfectly and it was entertaining. On the other hand, the finish was weak and came out of nowhere.

The Dream Team ("Nature Boy" Ric Flair & "Total Package" Lex Luger) vs. The Rock n Roll Express (Robert Gibson & Ricky Morton) (6/6/87)

Morton & Flair had some fun exchanges early before Luger came in and this was a different dynamic than any other Horsemen/RnR match as Luger was the power guy who could throw around the RnR which was something the Horsemen never had before. When Flair comes in the ring it's more business as usual and his work with both RnR is really good. The RnR would get stereo Figure-Four Leglocks but the Horsemen would break free and Luger would throw Gibson around on the floor to give the Horsemen the advantage. Luger would weaken Gibson so Flair could come in to get the Figure-Four Leglock which he used the ropes for leverage so he had to break the hold. The Horsemen continued to focus on Gibson's leg though but Gibson would roll over getting the hot tag to Morton who ran wild on Flair chasing him to the floor where he posted him then bashed his head on the ringside table. Morton climbed up top and hit him with a shot but Luger broke up a pinfall setting off a 4-way brawl. Flair eats a Double Dropkick but again Luger makes the save. Luger attacks Morton from behind and then they miss a double clothesline as Gibson tripped Luger. Morton then got an O'Connor Roll on Flair but Luger hit him with a clothesline from behind to win. Very fun match and a low-end nomination.

US Tag Titles: The Midnight Express ("Beautiful" Bobby Eaton & "Sweet" Stan Lane) © vs. "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin & Barry Windham (8/19/87)

The faces looked strong early on which was to be expected because the MX were so good at doing that but the one thing that was missing like Will said was the anger you would hope to get from the faces from all the months of the feuding between these factions. It did pick up though as Windham sent Lane to the floor where he started throwing punches and let Precious get some shots in as well which pissed off Cornette where both of them got in the ring where Precious slapped Cornette sending him flying to the floor. Windham was punching Eaton in the corner but he tossed him over the top to the floor where Windham took a hard bump and then back in the ring the MX really started working Windham over as the fans chanted BARRY. Windham would get the hot tag to Jimmy who ran wild on the MX before Windham would join in. Garvin went for the Brainbuster but Eaton would hit him in the back with the racquet and Lane fell on top to retain their titles. Fun match but not enough for a nomination.

The Rock n Roll Express (Robert Gibson & Ricky Morton) & Barry Windham vs. "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, & "Total Package" Lex Luger (6/22/87)

The story of this match early on is the babyfaces tagging in and out working over each member of the Horsemen as the crowd goes nuts for everything. These interchangable 6-man tags are always fun because you could plug in anyone from the two sides and they will put out a great effort. Morton looked the best on offense as he got the most out of anyone even Windham. We would get the triple Figure-Four spot which was a fun visual as Dillon whined then he got popped by Gibson but as that happened, Tully dumped Morton over the top rope to the floor. Morton would come back with a sunset flip on Arn but he tagged in Luger who nailed Morton from behind which allowed the Horsemen to take control. Morton though was pesky as shit and had some fun hope spots before Gibson & Windham both tried to help him which they got ran out by Tommy Young. Morton's headbutt on Arn was awesome especially Arn's selljob of it then the desperate tag to Tully who jumped on Morton keeping him away from the corner was great. Morton would hit a great desperation DDT on Arn to set up the hot tag to Windham who came in blazing hitting a big lariat on Tully for a nearfall. Everyone is brawling now inside and outside the ring as Luger gets Windham in the Torture Rack with Tully coming off the top rope with a smash to the head which Tommy Young called for the DQ which was a TERRIBLE finish. Even with that terrible finish I'm still going to back this as a nomination but wow.
