Posted January 9, 200817 yr comment_5426697 Some fun stuff on both shows, I assume we don't have any arena matches in this Morton v. Dundee feud they were running at this point right? That is a shame because I imagine those were killers. Also both shows have the tag team of Shogun and Samurai, Shogun is Shinya Hashimoto and he is laying Shinya Hashimoto level beatings on these jobbers. Some poor schmuck named Frasier is his main victim both weeks, and fuck does he kill this dude, I think his nose is broken in the second match, and his ribs may have been cracked in the first. The 2/25 show is setting up Jarrett v. Dutch and they show the MSC angle the previous week where Kerry Von Erich presents Jeff with Mike Von Erich's lucky jacket, which of course Dutch rips to shreds. Fun angle, but I don't think is extra worthy. The second week is setting up a dream match card where they rematch each wrestlers toughest match. Does footage of Robert Fuller v. Ron Fuller exist, either the 1989 version or the original? Also the second show has your amusing Undertaker v. Underfaker preview with a Dutch Mantel + Master of Pain v. Brian Lee + Jungle Jim match. One match worth noting Robert Fuller + Jimmy Golden v. Jed Grundy + Scott Steiner 2/25/89 This is for the CWA tag titles held by the Stud Stable. Grundy your big fat hillbilly who comes to ringside with a chicken and a jug on moonshine. Stud Stable are stooging gods here, from Fuller taking a swig of moonshine, to threatening the chicken, to bumping like freaks for semi- useless Grundy. You had the great powder finish, which gets reversed and Grudy smacking Golden with the moonshine jug to win the titles. Then you have the Stable go after the chicken with Grundy pulling off Miss Sylvia's top and falling in love. Lots of fun, and I am throwing it up. They had a rematch the next week which is shorter and not as good.
January 9, 200817 yr Author comment_5426733 That is too bad, Robert Fuller was totally on fire setting it up
January 12, 200817 yr comment_5426956 Who is Hashimoto's tag partner? Mike Porter is reffing and I'm convinced that Frasier is a guy who ran a Arkansas 90s indy (maybe the one with JC Ice starting the mini riot). I don't know if the jungle jim guy also tan an indy. I'm fucking hoping we have an actual match between Hash and partner and Smothers and partner. Phil doesn't mention Super D Action Jackson v some black jobber which is really fun as Memphis Action Jackson is not Texas Action Perry Jackson but rather a guy who looks like if Mabel had downs and Ernest Borgnine's posture. Black jobber is really good, has nice drop kicks and eats lariats well. Action Jackson is an absolute moster with great lariats and nasty throws. If Hashimoto wasn't on this tape you'd think action Jackson was the stiffest worker in the fed. Anyways two guys match up really well and want to know their backstory. Match is too short and one sided to make a set but really fun. Robert Fuller + Jimmy Golden v. Jed Grundy + Scott Steiner 2/25/89 Grundy and Steiner are nothing and this really is a Fuller/Golden show but fuck this is an entertaining show. I mean giant smile on my face all the way though it. The jug finish ruled...and Miss Sylvia's facial selling is hillarious. Lance Russell:" You might not want to take Miss Sylvia to the farm to see your mother"!!!
January 12, 200817 yr comment_5426962 Samurai was Shinji Sasazaki, I believe. That Action Jackson squash was really nasty, I remember it sticking out when I was converting the tapes for Trent. There's eventually a Shogun/Samurai vs Smothers/John Paul (Mason/Dixon Connection) match but I don't remember if I really paid attention to it while converting the tapes.
January 13, 200817 yr comment_5426970 Samurai was Shinji Sasazaki, I believe. http://www.puroresu.com/forum//archive/index.php/t-1019.html Shinji Sasazaki was a former New Japan young lion who came to the US just like other rookies but never returned to Japan. He and Hashimoto teamed in Memphis as "Shogun & Samurai". He also was a jobber in WCW and WWF as "Samurai". I believe he's a sushi chef in Nashville now. Ok that's awesome athlete defecting story. "Why am I washing Umanosuke Ueda's balls when I could be living on Music Row cooking?" I'm adding that to my must have wrestling culinary experiences next to Illio Dipaulo's and Rufus R Jones'restaurants. That Action Jackson squash was really nasty, I remember it sticking out when I was converting the tapes for Trent. Weird thing about that squash was it was both like he was crowbarring his opponent and like his opponent was just really good at eating his offense. Like the two guys trained together or something. Just for such a nasty match felt really cooperative and good. Just way too short. Who is Memphis Action Jackson?? There's eventually a Shogun/Samurai vs Smothers/John Paul (Mason/Dixon Connection) match but I don't remember if I really paid attention to it while converting the tapes. They showed a clip of Hash DDTing Smothers through a table so one imagines that they must have worked a series. Oh yeah and Phil Hickerson bragging about teaching Hashimoto all his offense is awesome. Next time someone repeats a goofy wrestler A was disciple of wrestler B (when it was just a fake Solie/Ross /whoever talking point) I'm whipping that out.
May 7, 200817 yr comment_5431168 “Dirty” Dutch Mantell vs. Alan Reynolds (2/18/89) Squash. They show Kerry presenting Jeff Jarrett with the jacket that he wore when he beat Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Title at MSC on 2/13/89. Jarrett then wears it to the ring for his match against Dutch and Dutch gives him shit for wearing a dead man’s coat. The Stud Stable then attacks Jeff and rips up the jacket. Dutch then cuts a promo live about being scared of dead people that would bring out Jeff who brawls with him. Definite extra material. (2/18/89) Master of Pain (Undertaker) vs. Freezer Thompson (2/18/89) Squash. Samurai (Shinya Hashimoto) & Shogun (Shinji Sasazaki) vs. Chris Frazier & Jungle Jim McPherson (2/18/89) Squash. Jeff Jarrett vs. Alan Yates (2/18/89) Jeff gets attacked by various masked men trying to collect on Dutch Mantell’s bounty but Jeff cleans house until Dutch breaks a board over Jeff’s head. Jeff is juicing as Master of Pain attacks him and the jobbers that tried to help him before Dream Weaver leads the cavalry. CWA Tag Titles: Robert Fuller & Jimmy Golden © vs. Jed Grundy & Scott Steiner (2/18/89) Fuller takes a swig of Jed’s moonshine as a kind gesture and he runs out of the ring to clear his throat. The early part of the match is the Studs taking Jed’s comedy offense and even the multi-man train. Studs cheat to get the advantage and Sylvia used the kendo stick on Scotty as he was on the floor. Steiner would get Fuller in an O’Connor Roll as the referee was distracted and Sylvia threw powder in his eyes leading to Fuller getting the pin to retain their titles. The referee then saw the powder and decided to restart the match so the Studs start back working on Scott but Jed would hit Golden with the jug leading to him getting pinned and new champs. The face locker room clears to celebrate as the Studs whine to Lance & Eddie Marlin. Studs then go after the chicken but Jed & Scotty run them off and Jed strips Sylvia making him very excited. This was fun stuff and I cosign Phil’s nom. Dream Weaver (Del Wilkes) & Jungle Jim McPherson vs. Keith Eric & PY Chu-Hi (Phil Hickerson) (2/18/89) Dream puts Eric to sleep for the win. Eddie Marlin asks Jeff Jarrett what his toughest match was and it was him as a referee getting his ass kicked by Dundee & Landell so they booked a match for Jeff against Landell. CWA Tag Titles: Jed Grundy & Scott Steiner © vs. Robert Fuller & Jimmy Golden (2/25/89) Well the reign didn’t last long as Fuller would whack Steiner with the kendo stick as Jerry Calhoun was stuck with Jed and Golden got the cover for the win. Eddie Marlin then visits Robert Fuller on his property as he holds a shotgun and asks Robert what his toughest match was and he said it was against his brother Ron. Robert comes out whining about the possible match but says that he would beat his brother. Lance gets Ron on the phone and Robert comes out to talk to him saying that he better hope his plane crashes before their match then hangs up on him. Samurai (Shinya Hashimoto) & Shogun (Shinji Sasazaki) vs. Chris Frazier & David Johnson (2/25/89) Squash. The Mason-Dixon Connection (John Paul & Tracy Smothers) vs. The Blue Knight & Ready (2/25/89) Squash. Ricky Morton talks about his toughest match and brings up Phil Hickerson wanting a match and they get into it at the desk. Marlin then asks Bill Dundee and he says his toughest match was against Dutch Mantell in a no rope bullwhip match. “Superstar” Bill Dundee vs. Frankie “The Thumper” Lancaster (2/25/89) Dundee looks good until Dutch runs in for the DQ. Lancaster gets pissed at Dutch for costing him the match and shoves him a couple of times. Marlin then comes out and says that his toughest match was against Tommy Gilbert so that match was made as well. “Dirty” Dutch Mantell & Master of Pain (The Undertaker) vs. Brian Lee & Jungle Jim McPherson (2/25/89) Squash.
