Buddy Rose vs. Matt Borne (2/3 falls) (Lumberjack Match) (20:25)

- Rose is complaining early on about having to wrestle on television when he thought it would be an arena match. As a lumbrjack math, there are about 4 guys out there to serve as "guards". There is confusion about the match as the ring announcer said it was No Disqualification but the announcer said regular rules apply. Who knows but they start out wild enough as Borne is pounding away on Rose. Rose ends up busting Borne open and working on the cut. Later on, Rose grabs a chair and nails Rose with it to bust him open. Seriously, the first fall might be enough of a nomination on its own. Borne punches Rose in the head and gets the pin after a flurry of punches. Rose was laid out and did not leave the ring after the fall. The 2nd fall continues in the same vein as the 1st until Rose gives Borne a low-blow to turn the tide. The ref claims it was to the stomach but to drive the point home, Buddy gets Borne in a wheelbarrow position and kicks him right in the crotch. He then does some running knee lifts, connecting with more "close calls" on each knee lift. Shit, this match is brutal. And after Rose appears to have the upper hand, Borne lands a low blow of his own. Borne goes for the punches again but gets flipped over in a sunset flip position and pinned. Borne wastes no time in the 3rd fall and goes o town on the cut including a SWEET double knee lift to the head. I don't know where he got it from but Buddy has a chain wrapped around his hand and knocks Borne the fuck out for the pin. OK, nevermind because Borne revives about ten seconds later. Borne's post-match interview sets up a chain match between the two. I think I remember seeing it listed on Walburton's Portland list so maybe that is something we can pursue. Anyway, this matchis a SLAM DUNK NOMINATION.

Man, these guys just escalated the intensity from their out-of-control fight the previous week. The first fall was brutal, with both guys drawing blood and Buddy putting oevr the violence by failing to get up for the break between falls. I loved the way he upped the ante by going for low blows. I'm not sure why that hasn't been a more popular device over the years. But Buddy made a great show of it. Borne looked savage going after Buddy's cut in the third fall until Buddy whipped out that chain for the KO. I used the word escalation before and that was the beauty of this match. The hatred just kept carrying these guys to the next plateau of violence -- punches to blood to low blows to weapons. Do we have the chain match they set up? Anyway, this fucking ruled and is an easy choice.

I fucking loved the beginning of this with Owen and Buddy arguing about it even being on tv and Buddy reeling at first only to get a hold of the mic and bust open Borne with it. I also loved Borne's big come back and Buddy's bloodying via chair. Buddy takes a crazed bump to the floor and you have to love the spot with the two guys battling on the apron, Buddy teasing another big bump, his head smacking into the post, the comeback knee, and the slam into rapid fire punch finish for Borne. Just great shit.

They come back and Buddy looks defeated as he is in the corner covered in his own blood. Borne charges in and Buddy tries to put up a resistance but nothing works. Buddy is so great selling every bit of offense Borne unloads on him which makes all the difference in a match like this. Buddy goes to the nuts to turn the tables and insist it was a legal strike to both the fans and Sandy Barr. Buddy targets the cut and works the ribs some. Borne makes a run, but Buddy steals a fall with a sunset flip variation which was a great way to work it.

Third fall opens up with a shit ton of fans milling around ringside and Borne beating Buddy's ass. Things aren't going Buddy's way when he gets a hold of a massive chain and knocks out Borne with it for the fall. Really makes you want to see the follow up, which I don't think we have. Still this was really good.

This was no DQ lumberjack and just an awesome brawl. They beat each other bloody within the first few minutes and just kept going with the great punches, low blows, etc. I don't feel the need to go blow by blow on this one. Suffice to say it held up to the top tier of slugfests we've seen from the '80s sets. The third fall was a little short, with Buddy pulling a chain from his tights to KO Borne. Frank Bonnema was also super-annoying, claiming they were fighting under normal rules despite Owen announcing the no DQ stip quite explicitly. But I'm quibbling. Great match.
