Joshi #29 – 1986

May 1986 TV:

JB Angels vs. Yumiko Hotta & Chigusa Nagayo

Like seemingly all the Bomb Angels matches from around this time, this one was exciting. Basically, the JB Angels used their double teams to dominate. Nagayo got pissed off mid-match and tried to rally, but they beat her down pretty viciously. They then punished Hotta so fiercely that she was literally cowering in the corner. In the end, the JB Angels win because Nagayo and Hotta screw up a double team and the Angels execute their counter perfectly. It fit nicely with the story of the match and I'll throw this one a nomination.

Lola Gonzalez, Kaoru Kage & Yasuko Ishiguro vs. Hisako Uno & Red Typhoons

This was a fun one-woman show by Lola as she bumped all over the place and seemed pretty vicious with her mat offense. But the match was short and probably not a nomination.

Bull Nakano vs. Itsuki Yamazaki

Bull wa very nasty in this one, with lots of punches and knees to the gut. She even choked Yamazaki with her own hair. The ending was some kind of double countout or disqualification, with Dump's crew whupping on Yamazaki. This had potential but ended abruptly enough that I wouldn't nominate it.

Dump Matsumoto, Condor Saito & La Galáctica vs. Devil Masami, Noriyo Tateno & Yukari Omori

I love Omori and Masami, and Dump did a couple nice butt drops on top of a garbage can on top of Omori. But this is another one that just kind of ended without the drama building as much as it might have.

1986 Grand Prix: Lioness Asuka vs. Chigusa Nagayo

They did a nice job of building the big-match atmosphere, with beforehand interviews and full ring entrances. Asuka assumed the dominant role with Chigusa playing the spunky underdog early. They eventually exchanged a bunch of big moves with the school girls screaming their approval in the background. The draw seemed like the only rational conclusion. Definite nomination.

WWWA Tag Team titles: Crush Girls vs. La Galáctica & Lola González

Galactica and Lola were a very fun team with lots of cool, nasty looking matwork and general bitchiness. The Crush Girls did all their normal stuff in this one. Probably not a high-end nomination but I'll throw it on the pile.

Yukari Omori, Hisako Uno & Lioness Asuka vs. Devil Masami, Mika Komatsu & Yumi Ogura

Omori's big-woman offense rules. This was an exciting match but I don't have enough context yet on AJW's quality throughout the decade to give it a thumbs up.

Dump Matsumoto vs. Bull Nakano

This was a hellacious brawl. Dump showed she was quite willing to turn the full power of her evil on her tag-team partner, whipping her minions into attacking Nakano. At one point, they were standing toe-to-toe, hitting each other with sticks. Then, a bloody Bull tried to put Dump's eye out. Dump finally finishes with some brutal looking power moves. She then rampages through the crowd, sending announcers and hundreds of fans scurrying. What a great heel. This is a definite nomination.

Kazue Nagahori vs. Chigusa Nagayo

All-action match. Nagahori stages a nice ambush on Chigusa early. This might be a low-level nomination but again, I'm not sure of the context, because frankly, all the matches on this disc are good.

JB Angels vs. Condor Saito & La Galáctica (2/3 falls)

There were lots of video break-ups during this one. I couldn't tell if it was the disc or the source material but anyway, this was another thrilling match with lots of big moves and state-of-the-art double teaming. The JB Angels might have been the most exciting team in the world at this point and they certainly worked at a faster pace and cranked out more high-end offense than any American men's team. Another definite nomination.
