This had some good action and a wild brawl after the match but not a nomination. Handicap Match: Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Jim Cornette & Jimmy Hart (4/18/83) This was fun. “Exotic” Adrian Street vs. “Superstar” Bill Dundee (1/30/83) If Dundee wins he gets Cornette & Miss Linda for 5 minutes but if he loses he gets 10 lashes. Street was really rough here using his normal moves but broke out a piledriver and took the match to the floor where he unloaded european uppercuts. Cornette & Linda would also get involved but it doesn’t stop Dundee from fighting as hard as he can and chases Cornette & Linda around the ring. Dundee then unloads some punches on Street before taking it to the floor where he would post Street. Dundee snaps and just pounds on Street relentlessly then goes after Linda as he grabs the perfume bottle and starts squirting everyone including Paul Morton for the DQ. Dundee then takes his lashes from everyone and he fights everyone out of the ring afterwards. I loved this and this is a nomination. Losers Leave Town: The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn & Stan Lane), Dutch Mantell, & Steve O vs. “Exotic” Adrian Street, Jesse Barr, & The Sheepherders (Jonathan Boyd & Luke Williams) (3/28/83) This had all kinds of stips unique to each wrestler if they lost making this match really important to these guys as there was hair on the line along with money for some of the guys. The brawling goes from the ring to the floor and these guys are just waylaying on each other. The finish was pretty nifty as well with the Sheeps getting pinned thus forcing everyone to leave town. Cornette cuts an incensed promo after the match. Great stuff and a definite nomination. Stretcher Match for the Southern Tag Titles: The Moondogs (Rex & Spot) © vs. The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn & Stan Lane) (5/2/83) Dogs would pound Lane bloody early in the match using their bone and a chain with Keirn trying to help but Lane just gets destroyed. The bloody Lane tries to fight back and uses his karate kicks to try and fight his way to his corner but the Dogs are too strong. Lane would finally get the hot tag to Keirn who comes in blazing and this turns into a big brawl. Keirn goes for Hart through the ropes but the Dogs hang him in the ropes and they choke the life out of him. Lane brings in a chair and he cleans house as he had gotten the match stopped due to Keirn being hung in the ropes. Lane finally gets him free and stands over him with a chair to hold off the Dogs. They get Keirn on a stretcher but of course the Dogs throw him off until Lane runs them off with the ringbell. This was great stuff and another nomination. Mask vs. Mask for the Mid-America Heavyweight Title: Stagger Lee (Koko Ware) © vs. Ace of Spades (5/23/83) Ace dominates the early part of this match but Stagger would fight back using some great punches before being thrown into Paul Morton. Cornette comes in the ring and accidentally hits Ace with his shoe leading to Ace getting pinned. Ace unmasks as Tommy Gilbert and has to fight off the Galaxians (Danny Davis & Ken Wayne) after the match. Stretcher Match: Jackie Fargo & Stan Lane vs. The Moondogs (Rex & Spot) (5/9/83) This is too short to be a match but this is a slam dunk extra. Southern Tag Titles vs. Jim Cornette’s Hair: The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn & Stan Lane) © vs. “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton & Duke Myers (5/16/83) Fabs really work on Duke early here causing him to juice heavily and Paul Morton is checking the cut but keeps the match going although the Fabs are just destroying him. Eaton tries to help but they punish him too. Paul Morton has had enough and he decides to stop the match which infuriates Cornette who demands that Eddie Marlin come out. Marlin decides to restart the match due to his importance so the Fabs immediately go back to work on Duke trying to pin him but Eaton stops it everytime. Keirn finally gets a pin on Duke but Morton is with Lane/Hart so Eaton climbs up top and Cornette throws him a title belt with him dropping on Keirn. Duke rolls on Keirn to win the match. This was wild stuff but basically as big of a squash as you will see except for the end. Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Crusher Blackwell (5/4/81) This was during a time when Hart was bringing in random guys weekly to take care of Lawler but it was for naught. Blackwell goes on the attack from the start with a dropkick and just takes it from there as he throws Lawler to the floor where he gives him a big slam. Blackwell would continue the pounding then we got a clip and come back to the point where Lawler begins his comeback using his great punches to take Blackwell down. This turns into a slugfest with both men punching each other down to the mat. Blackwell would hit a backdrop suplex for a nearfall but Lawler would get up and used one of his own on Blackwell for a nearfall. We get another clip with Lawler getting beat on again as Blackwell uses his weight to weaken Lawler but Lawler would soon enough drop the strap and the punches come flying. Lawler would miss his diving fistdrop from the middle rope but Blackwell would miss his big splash with Lawler covering him for the win. This had a couple of clips but still I’m throwing it on the block.
March 4, 200817 yr comment_5429004 Adrian Street, Jesse Barr, & The Sheepherders vs. The Fabulous Ones, Dutch Mantell, & Steve O (3/21/83) - I thought this was perfectly fine wrestling. Predictably, Steve O is the punching bag and that is the right move to make. I think the biggest mark against this match is that Steve O was in there way too long. Considering the teams, I want to see more of everyone else. I can understand why Kris didn't nominate this. Handicap Match: Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Jim Cornette & Jimmy Hart (4/18/83) - I think this should make an EXTRA in the Hart-Lawler feud. “Exotic” Adrian Street vs. “Superstar” Bill Dundee (1/30/83) - This is 3 on 1 as Miss Linda and Cornette constantly interfere. After watching the whole thing, I am going to vote no here. I thought the Mid South match between the two was better and I wouldn't have voted for that one. I think that the interference wasn't very creative and neither was Street's offense which I normally enjoy. I said this about another match but it holds true here also... this feels like a late 90s RAW main event. The match looks intriguing but it rarely pays off before the screwy ending. Losers Leave Town: The Fabulous Ones, Dutch Mantell & Steve O vs. Adrian Street, Jesse Barr & The Sheepherders (Jonathan Boyd & Luke Williams) (3/28/83) - I agree that this was much much better than the first one. More wrestlers get involved than just Steve O. The end was wild with action happening all over the place. I may need to get the tape from Jeff since it has the breaks in titles unless this exists elsewhere in VG VQ. The Moondogs vs. The Fabulous Ones (Stretcher Match) (5/2/83) - This has been one of my favorite Memphis feuds. Early on, the Dogs beat the hell out off Stan Lane and he is a bloody mess. Still, even though he is being pounded on, he still has time for his karate kicks. I love how Keirn has so much hatred for these guys that he takes a play from their book and bites the head of one of the Dogs. This is the match where Keirn gets his head stuck in the ropes and gets abused. It looked like they were going to rip his head off. THis is a definite nomination. (EDIT: Looks like Kris and I noticed the same things) Stagger Lee vs. Ace of Spades (Mask vs. Mask) (5/23/83) - Not much of a match. Jackie Fargo & Stan Lane vs. The Moondogs (Stretcher Match) (5/9/83) - I am tempted to nominate this but I think it would be best served as an extra. Awesome Memphis Violence. The Fabulous Ones vs. Bobby Eaton & Duke Myers (5/16/83) - I didn't really get a squash vibe from this match. Eaton and Myers controlled the first 5 minutes and when Keirn got the tag, then Myers became a punching bag. And damn, was he being abused. You just see his head beomcing redder and redder over time and the Stan Lane headbutts couldn't have helped. The big ending and unexpected result made this match a keeper for me. Nomination. Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Crusher Blackwell (5/4/81) - I loved this match when I put this on my Lawler comp a couple of years ago. I know Bigelow got a lot of props for being an agile big man but I think people need to see more Blackwell. Combine someone like Blackwell with the big offense and Jerry Lawler and you get a great match. I wish it would have gone a little longer but this is still a nomination.
