Posted April 17, 200817 yr comment_5430721 Empty Arena Match: Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Terry Funk (4/6/81) This is the full unedited version of this match and a slam-dunk nomination even though it's not technically an official match.
April 17, 200817 yr comment_5430730 I say no. It's just so weird (especially the finish) that I don't think it works that well as a match but does as an angle in the extras.
April 17, 200817 yr comment_5430731 I think this goes on the actual set more than the Concession Stand Brawl or any post-match fight. This has generated so much discussion over the years that I think it hass to go on the set. I would also be interested to see where people would rank this. As for a match, I don't think that it is a slam dunk match by any means. Terry Funk's insanity act is a blast and Lance Russell played his part perfectly but the actual action loses something when played in an empty arena. I think this could be compared to the Orchestra match as a unique match concept that Memphis was willing to do even if it wasn't going to drive ticket sales. Yes vote.
April 18, 200817 yr comment_5430740 I say put it on, most of the contriversial pics from the Watts set are getting a wide variety of opinions, while mid-level stuff is underwhelming everyone. There are people who love Armstrong v. DiBiase, Gilbert/Mare v. Bruise Brothers, OMG v. Robley and people who don't. While no one has much good to say about the lesser Reed v. Slaterish matches. So I think we should do the same for Memphis stuff, put this on, put on the Fuchi/Onita concession stand, put on the orchestra match.
April 18, 200817 yr comment_5430744 Yes and no. It was my idea to put on the "controversial" picks on the Mid South set before any other selections but this pick isn't really controversial. The issue is what defines a match. With the Mid South set, there was never any real controversy on what should be considered a match. I have always looked at this as a match where I look at the post-match brawls as just that... post-match brawls. The orchestra match is completely unconventional but could still be considered a match, no matter how wierd. I would probably be willing to concede the Concession Stand Brawl while leaving the Louisville clip on the extras, only because of the unique gimmick/promotion of the Concession Stand Brawl. It is almost like the Hell in a Cell or Bra & Panties match of its day. Also, the middle stuff is getting the reaction I thought it would... negative reviews compared to the awesome stuff that surrounds it. When put in context, surrounded by mediocre mid card matches, they stand out. These people didn't have to sit through the drek that we did to pound out the 150. How would Reed-Slater fare on a WWF set or an AWA set? It would probably be pretty damn high so I have no regrets supporting some of those "middle" matches.
May 16, 200817 yr comment_5431307 Watched this again today, I think it goes on as a match, I probably won't vote it very high even though Funk is spectacular, but I think it should go on
August 6, 200817 yr comment_5433660 Rarities 1 is the best of the Bob uncensored versions. Is the one on the "Madmen..." tape uncut aside from bleeping the swearing if I wanted to see if it would be possible to sync them together?
August 6, 200817 yr comment_5433664 No, the Madmen version is only 8 minutes where the uncut version is about 14.
