Posted April 30, 200817 yr comment_5430970 VQ is spotty, but I think it is good enough on the matches I nominated to put on. JERRY LAWLER VS. DORY FUNK JR. 3/30/81 Pretty fun match, Dory has some of the best headlock take overs I have seen. Started slow, but broke down into a fun brawl with Lawlers punches v. Dory's awesome looking uppercuts. Fun stuff and worth a nomination STEVE KEIRN VS. DREAM MACHINE Comedy match which was entertaining, but done better in other places on this set. BOBBY EATON/KOKO WARE VS. DUTCH MANTELL/KING COBRA 7/19/82 This was really great, Cobra pretty much stayed out of the way, and we got to see Mantell work with Koko and Bobby Eaton. Koko and Eaton have a ton of great looking athletic bumps and double teams. Cobra had some nice dance moves, but this was a Dutch show. I loved Dutch whipping Eaton off the top rope. Fun stuff and a nomination for sure KAMALA VS. BILL DUNDEE JIP about 10 minutes in which was a shame, as it sounded like it was 10 minutes of Dundee running from Kamala, and Dundee is awesome as a running babyface, I liked what we got, but we got less then half KAMALA VS. JERRY LAWLER This was clipped up awful. What we got wasn't particularly good, although J.J. Dillons top rope axehandle looked nice
April 30, 200817 yr comment_5430976 This disc also has Lance Russell on Randy Hales' talk show in Jonesboro, which is a must-have extra.
May 27, 200817 yr comment_5431710 Funk Jr. vs. Lawler - This was ok. I wouldn't call it an upper-tier match though. I also had a hard time getting into the match with the subpar VQ. I am also not a big Dory fan at all and have seen much better Lawler and Dory matches so this gets a no vote from me. STEVE KEIRN VS. DREAM MACHINE BOBBY EATON/KOKO WARE VS. DUTCH MANTELL/KING COBRA 7/19/82 - Dark VQ combined with shaky camera made it hard for me to watch these. Hopefully, the tag makes its way on a better looking disc somewhere.
July 18, 200817 yr comment_5433086 Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Dory Funk Jr. (3/30/81) Jimmy Hart is suspended above the ring making this quite the spectacle. Dory was great at the start here using his ground game and vicious european uppercuts to jack Lawler’s jaw around in the corner. Dory actually brought Memphis style action to his normal game even slamming Lawler’s head on the ringside table. Lawler would pull out a chain to help him fight off Dory but he would drop it and Dory would pick it up and put it away. Lawler started firing punches to get Dory away from him and he succeeds following him to the floor where Lawler would chase Dory with a step from ringside but they would get back in the ring soon enough. Dory goes into chickenshit mode putting his body between the ropes then goes to the floor again to get away from Lawler but he would get pounded into the table. Lawler takes control and starts punching Dory so Calhoun tries to stop him letting Dory get a knee to the gut taking Lawler down. Lawler gets up and tries punching him again with Calhoun again stopping him and again Dory kneeing Lawler in the gut this time for a nearfall. Lawler would soon drop the strap and he would fire his own knee in Dory’s gut before using Dory’s head as a punching bag but Dory would push Lawler into Calhoun. Hart drops a chain down to Dory and he would use it to KO Lawler but Calhoun was still down. Calhoun would finally make the count but Lawler kicks out so Dory uses the chain to choke Lawler into another nearfall. Calhoun this time would find the chain and would fight him over it so Lawler pulls out another one and decks Dory a few times then Calhoun tries to fight Lawler for his chain so Lawler throws him down. Dory would then cradle Lawler using his feet on the ropes but Calhoun sees it so Dory nails Calhoun with a forearm for the DQ. They would continue to brawl after the match and Lawler was just punching the hell out of Dory. Hart would get lowered and went after Lawler but he would get beat up as well as Dory. This was great stuff and a definite nomination as Dory was off the chain good here bringing a Memphis-style to his game and Lawler was just fucking great as usual. Steve Keirn vs. Dream Machine (7/19/82) This was okay but nothing special. “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton & Sweet Brown Sugar vs. King Cobra & Dirty Dutch Mantell (7/19/82) Once again Eaton & Sugar are so damn awesome in everything they do and they were true to form here as they bounced all over the ring then dished out just as good when on offense. Mantell’s hatred for Eaton had him pumped up for this too and he was very spirited both in and out of the ring on offense. The sidestory of Dutch & Cobra having some bad blood in the past also added to the great story here and Dutch even hit Cobra by mistake but they would reconcile and pound on the heels. The match was very fast paced with Dutch playing FIP and getting destroyed before finally getting the hot tag to Cobra who would clean house. Dutch would bring out Shoobaby and started whipping Eaton & Sugar all over the ring for the DQ. This was great stuff and an easy nomination. Yes as Bix said the Randy Hales interview of Lance Russell must make the extras.
