Posted July 7, 200817 yr comment_5432720 This is the big title change where Lawler finally wins the AWA Title. This was a real good match. In the early portions it was a tad slow, but once Hennig's 2nd got the boot it picked up. I liked Hennigs bumps for Lawler's punches. Because these were Lawler punches this worked. Between Hennigs bumps, and Lawler's selling this was good stuff. Lawler does a leg drop from the top rope and misses. Lawler then starts selling the back with Hennig working it over. The wrestlers take it outside and Hennig busts Lawler open. The crowd is super hot for this match. Hennig goes all nasty and just goes after the cut.Hennig is great and throws some amazing punches at the cut. Lawler pulls the strap and goes wild. The finish was a tad weak, I didn't think Hennig sold it well enough. This is a slam dunk nomination.
July 17, 200817 yr comment_5433055 This won't finish in my top ten, but will have a shot at my top twenty, I enjoyed all the Jackie Fargo early and then drama near the end, Henning working over the cut was awesome, finish felt a little abrupt for such a long match. Great, great stuff
July 29, 200817 yr comment_5433345 Curt Hennig vs. Jerry Lawler, 5/9/88 G.H Lawler comp - Everything about this match makes you feel like you are watching the biggest fight of the year. It is amazing how you can appreciate a match because the promotion treats it as if it is the only thing that mattered. Early on, both guys pause (stall) when they need to assess the situation and pounce when it is advantageous. Hennig was a litte rest happy early on but it built up in a big way. I love Lawler hanging onto the rope with one hand so Hennig kicks him off and onto the floor in a nice bump. It also cast doubt because Lawler had pulled the strap but Lawler is laying on the floor a bloody mess. You have to appreciate them casting that kind of doubt when it is do or die for Lawler. Add the possibility that the ref may stop the match because of Lawler’s blood and you add another dimension to the doubt. The final pin felt anti-climactic but the celebration was great. Definite nomination and Top 20 match.
August 12, 200817 yr comment_5433923 There is no way in hell that we couldn't do this section and not include this match just for the story alone of Lawler finally winning the world title that he has aspired for. The match itself was great stuff and was the icing on the cake to end the Lawler story. Slam dunk nomination.
