recap of Bruiser Brody Abdullah the Butcher feud

This was a cool angle.

1. Bruiser Brody vs Abdullah the Butcher - Ft Worth

I love how Hart covers Abby's eyes when he is searched. Abby and Hart make an evil pair. This had some neat brawling with weapons that the crowd was hot for. It was a great visual seeing the wrestlers brawling throughout the crowd. I loved how both wrestlers went backstage behind a door and then came out through a wall and knocked Hart on his ass. It's neat Hart treating this like a shoot. Overall, this was fun, but paled in comparison to the Sawyer/Duggan brawls on the Mid-South set. With that said it still is a nom.

2. Bruiser Brody vs Abdullah the Butcher - cage match; Cotton Bowl 10-12-86

Again I just love the black hood over Abby. I thought this was pretty mediocre. The match seemed more designed to get Fritz V.E over as opposed to the wrestlers. I feel the cage limited on what the wrestlers could do. Fritz's comeback on Abby could be an extra on why the promotion ended up in the shitter.

3. Kevin Von Erich vs Black Bart - Cotton Bowl, 10-12-86

This was solid. Nothing special. I thought Kevin's standing leg scissors to Bart's ribs looked great though.

int: post match with Kevin Von Erich

This was just erie looking.

int: Brian Adias with Al Madril. Kerry Von Erich comes out and confronts Adias. Maril tells Kerry "you fell off your tricycle, you stubbed your toe, now you got no guts. Madril attacks Kerry with his crutch. Kevin Von Erich comes in but Madril attacks him as well. Madril holds Kevin for Adias to slap. This is the start of the Adias/Kevin feud - Ft Worth

This was a great angle an a slam dunk extra.

4. Bruiser Brody + Steve Simpson vs Abdullah the Butcher + Crusher Yurkov

Bigelow looks great here. I can't believe he's taking arm drags from Simpson. That slam Bigelow gives Simpson was just brutal. I thought the match was fun, but falls short of a nom. When Simpson was fighting on the floor he got his hair tangled up with the rope barricade. That is the 1st time I ever saw that happen.

int: Larry Sharpe + Bam Bam Bigelow - Texas All Star

5. Bam Bam Bigelow vs Carl Clark(?) - Texas All Star

Squash.

6. Al Madril + Tug Taylor vs Billy Joe Travis + Scott Casey - Texas All Star

int: Jonathon Boyd w/ Shepp - Texas All Star

7. Mike + Dizzy Golden vs Tiger Conway Jr + Iceman Parsons - Texas All Star

8. Bruiser Brody vs Sheepherder Tanue - Texas All Star

9. Bruiser Brody vs Tug Taylor - Texas All Star

int: Bruiser Brody - Texas All Star

10. Kerry Von Erich vs Super Destroyer #1

I liked this, but not as a nom. The Super D's continue to impress me in the matches I've watched.

11. David Von Erich vs Kamala - Reunion Arena, 11-24-83

This was fun. David was great at bumping for Kamala's chops. Both men bleed and I'll give this a low level nom. We need some Kamala matches for the set.

WE get a Kerry V.E music video to Eye of the Tiger extra material.

Ice man video to?

12. Fritz Von Erich vs Abdullah the Butcher - Claw vs Python sleeper match; Reunion Arena, 11-27-86

This starts with a Brody/Abby feud montage

Abdullah the Butcher vs. Bruiser Brody (8/4/86)

This was the wild brawl that I’ve been waiting on between these two men and man did they deliver with Abby bleeding in seconds. Abby would smash Brody with a weapon causing him to bleed and the crowd is going apeshit every time Abby pokes Brody with his stick. Gary Hart is awesome here in his role distracting David Manning so Abby can do his dirty deeds. Brody would make his comeback and they would brawl throughout the building with both men really laying in the shots. They would brawl behind a wall but would fight through it with Brody using a board to bash Abby’s head in. The match would go back to the ring with Brody just killing Abby with the board and getting DQed but not stopping his punishment. Hart then comes back with a steel chair nailing Brody in the back allowing Abby to recover and use the board for his pleasure. Abby & Hart would clear out babyface jobbers until Brody slid out of the ring. This was so fucking awesome and could be a Top 10 match. Slam dunk nomination.

Steel Cage Match w/Fritz Von Erich as special referee: Bruiser Brody vs. Abdullah the Butcher (10/12/86)

This just wasn’t as good as the Fort Worth match because of two reasons as the cage kept them from doing what they do best and that was brawling around the ring and the other being the presence of Fritz Von Erich. Fritz became the main focus of this match to no surprise and this was setup to further his long feud with Gary Hart as well as to setup Fritz & Abby for a future match which would happen the next month. I think this should be an extra because it furthers the feuds in a good way but the match itself wasn’t anything really.

World Class World Heavyweight Title: Black Bart © vs. Kevin Von Erich (10/12/86)

Kerry on crutches would accompany Kevin to ringside riding in a Corvette. Kevin looked good here using his legs to keep Bart on the mat or taking him down like the fucking great standing leg scissors on Bart’s ribs. Bart would get control and pounded on Kevin sending him to the floor and when he came in he got a legdrop across the back of his neck for a nearfall but Kevin would bounce right back up and would hit Bart with a flying dropkick off the top rope and a diving body press for the win. There was a great celebration after the match with family and friends in the ring and the locker room with a champagne bath. This was really short as it didn’t even go 7 minutes so I’m not sure about a nomination.

Then we get the heel turn of Brian Adias as he is going to follow Al Madril who cuts a great heel promo on Kerry then attacked him with a crutch. Kevin would then show up attacking Madril as Adias stands and watches before he decides to turn heel and attacks the Von Erichs. This was pretty damn good and a definite extra.

Bruiser Brody & Steve Simpson vs. Abdullah the Butcher & Crusher Yurkov (11/7/86)

Wow check out those teams and Simpson is so the antithesis of the other three guys. Bammer was just an athletic freak here doing cartwheels before the match. Tony Atlas would come down as the bell rings to counter Gary Hart & Larry Sharpe at ringside. Bammer takes some bumps for Simpson especially on an armdrag but he would pound on him pretty fierce before giving him to Abby who posts him on the floor. This ended up being a wild brawl on the floor with Abby choking Simpson with barricade wire as Brody & Yurkov brawled around the ring. Simpson’s hair would get caught up in the barricade wire but they would free him just so he could continue to get his ass kicked by Abby. Brody would get sick of this and just jumped in the ring to brawl with the heels until Gary Hart would get involved for the DQ. Atlas would then jump in to attack Hart & Sharpe as Brody & Abby brawled. Another wild brawl that goes in the extra file.

Then we get more Texas All-Star stuff.

Scott Casey & Billy Travis vs. Al Madril & Tug Taylor (August 1986)

This wasn’t bad and Travis/Madril were fun against each other.

No DQ for the USA Tag Titles: Tiger Conway Jr. & Iceman King Parsons © vs. Dizzy & Mike Golden (August 1986)

Faces were good here especially Tiger trying to a modified Pedigree in 1986. After a ref bump, Mike Golden threw powder in the eyes of both opponents that would help the heels win the titles. The faces then cut a great heated promo afterwards.

Bruiser Brody vs. Tanue (August 1986)

Bigfoot would run in for the DQ.

Bruiser Brody vs. Tug Taylor (August 1986)

Squash.

Kerry Von Erich vs. Super Destroyer (Scott Irwin) (3/30/84)

Jesus was Kerry hot here or what as the fans are just molten hot for him and he was in the middle of his big superpush to the NWA title shot against Flair at Texas Stadium. Kerry looks great here on both offense and defense with Super D being a very solid opponent for him. Super D would go for the Superplex to finish off Kerry but he would get pushed off and Kerry would hit his own version of the Gino Hernandez backward diving elbow off the middle rope for the win. Fun match but very short clocking in at just over 7 minutes and I think this could be a maybe nomination.

David Von Erich vs. Kamala (11/24/83)

They are setting David up for his run to the NWA title and they put him against the monster Kamala to further his push. This was nothing pretty as it was a straight up brawl with Kamala bloodying David and getting off on tasting his blood. David would make his comeback though getting the claw on Kamala but Friday would interfere so David put the claw on him on the apron then Akbar would attack David and got the claw for his pleasure as well with the match ending in a DQ. David then gets attacked after the match until Kerry makes the save with him slamming Kamala. The finish was blah but after watching this again I changed my stance from the first viewing because the action was really good and bloody plus it had a hot angle going with it so I will back this as a nomination.

Then we get clips of Fritz vs. Abby from Reunion Arena on 11/27/86 where Fritz put up his iron claw against Abby’s Python Sleeper. Brody would then run out to destroy Abby after the match. Extra material.

recap of Bruiser Brody Abdullah the Butcher feud

This seems like extra material to me. Great stoic-but-cowardly Mark Lowrance commentary: "I'M GOING TO CRAWL ON TOP OF THE TV TRUCK NOW."

Bruiser Brody vs Abdullah the Butcher - Ft Worth

I may have to watch this again (and again, and again, and again....). I was watching it with non-wrestling fans, and well, whenever you watch a match with other people, your mind is never totally on the match. But they were freaking out over this, and proclaiming it to be the greatest wrestling match of all time, and I think it's a pretty safe nomination, myself.

Bruiser Brody vs Abdullah the Butcher - cage match; Cotton Bowl 10-12-86

I liked this a bit more than shoe and Kris did. The cage kept them from brawling outside the ring, but I thought Abby's in-ring straight brawling looked really good. Also, after watching the Mid-South set, I can get down with the tough old retired wrestler still being something of a threat, and I thought Fritz didn't try to steal the spotlight too much until the end of the match. Still, that finish was pretty egregious case of Fritz putting himself over the actual wrestlers in the match, and Brody wasn't very exciting here, so I would agree that this isn't a nomination.

Kevin Von Erich vs Black Bart - Cotton Bowl, 10-12-86

I didn't really like this that much. Black Bart's Rocker Dropper as Kevin was re-entering the ring was cool, but otherwise he looked pretty bad. Kevin always looks great, but this was not one of his better one-man shows.

int: post match with Kevin Von Erich

Geez, they all looked so happy....

int: Brian Adias with Al Madril

Adias and Madril are not really guys who set my world on fire, but Madril's promo is great and this is a really hot angle and a definite extra.

Bruiser Brody + Steve Simpson vs Abdullah the Butcher + Crusher Yurkov

Oh man, this ruled so much. It is way too short to get a nomination, but it has to go on as an extra.

Al Madril + Tug Taylor vs Billy Joe Travis + Scott Casey - Texas All Star

OK, so heel Madril is way more fun than face Madril, apparently. Good to know. Good match. Madril looked great. Ottman always stunk, but I loved Casey's interactions with him. That slam looked like a real feat of strength.

Mike + Dizzy Golden vs Tiger Conway Jr + Iceman Parsons - Texas All Star

This felt like the first 2/3 of a nomination-worthy match. Everyone in the match had really nice headbutts. Ref bumps in No DQ matches bug me, especially since they didn't take advantage of the stip until after it happened, but Mike Golden kinda made up for it by knocking the ref back out with one of the belts after he came to. Still, felt like a match that needed a babyface comeback run at the end. Instead, the heels take control for a little while after the ref bump and win.

int: Tiger Conway Jr + Iceman Parsons - Texas All Star

Iceman is fired up, Conway gets hilariously cut off.

Bruiser Brody vs Sheepherder Tanue - Texas All Star

Blech. Highlight is the ring announcer's Michael Buffer/Lillian Garcia-quality introduction of "Sheep Tanue" and his "partner" Bruiser Brody.

Kerry Von Erich vs Super Destroyer #1

This is the kind of match that I'd give a nomination to if anyone else felt really strongly about it, but that doesn't seem to be the case, so I'm giving it a pass. Still, another strong performance from Super D #1. Loved the bump through the ropes off of Kerry's dropkick. Kerry looked good, too, but I've seen him look better.

Fritz Von Erich vs Abdullah the Butcher - Claw vs Python sleeper match; Reunion Arena, 11-27-86

I wasn't really feeling the Fritz/Abdullah stuff. Once Fritz was out of the picture it got more interesting, and might be extra material.
