Posted October 5, 200816 yr comment_5435029 This was one of the best of their series, Lawler is almost Cactus Jack like in his insane bumping, and both guys are just laying into each other. Some awesome punch combinations in the corner by Lawler. Slam dunk nomination AWA Wrestling Classics on ESPN
March 30, 201213 yr comment_5498949 Man this was pretty great early on with Hennig cowering from Lawler's punches in the corner and then doing a cheap little inside leg trip on the second attempt before fleeing to the floor. Man they do a great job building to the first big shot so when you get it it really feels like a major deal. The first major punch exchange in the corner is really incredible and leads to a great Hennig bump over the top to the floor. Hennig takes a break and almost gets counted out which would have costs him the title, but makes it back in time and offers up a handshake. The near fall off the second rope fist drop was really good. Hennig cuts off his momentum with a shot straight to Lawler's balls. Lawler takes his big floatover the rope bump and then a crazed back bump to the concrete as he tries to get back in the ring. Lawler makes his comeback and Hennig ends up taking a crazy bump to the floor, where he counters by posting Jerry for the lame DQ finish to a good match. Not top tier for either guy, but certainly something I could see on the set.
May 17, 201213 yr comment_5502721 AWA World Heavyweight Title: Curt Hennig © vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler (2/19/88) This is setting up Lawler as a major player in the AWA on the national level because he will be taking the title over a month later. Lawler has the Renegades logo on his ass which was a nice touch. Hennig was such a chickenshit to start cowering like a bitch in the corner then taking cheapshots when he could before dropping to the floor to stall. When Lawler does actually connect with a good punch Hennig bumps all the way from the ring to the floor which was great. Both men would actually throw some great punches here with a lot of the work being done in the corners which gave it a phonebooth type of feel. Curt gets so frustrated that he almost gets counted out but he comes back begging off offering his hand in friendship which is declined. Lawler would come firing back hitting his fistdrop off the middle rope for a nearfall then follows up with some awesome punches until Hennig kicks him very low to subdue him. Lawler then outdoes Hennig with the bumping as he takes a huge bump off a punch over the top rope to the floor where he landed very hard then takes another big bump to the floor as Hennig stopped him from getting back in the ring. Lawler would drag Hennig to the floor with him and then went back to work on him when they got back in the ring as he dropped the strap while throwing bombs. Hennig then took a great staggered bump from the ring to the floor with Lawler following right behind him but ended up eating a post shot for the DQ. This may not have been a classic but this was pretty damn great for what it was though and I think this is a slam dunk nomination.
