Posted November 20, 200816 yr comment_5435857 Kevin Von Erich vs. Killer Khan This is for the vacant Beat the Champ TV Title. This was fun while it lasted, but that wasn't long before David Manning calls for the double DQ. They keep brawling, and Manning calls for help from the back. The Freebirds come out, leading to Mark Lowrance disappointedly intoning "Well, that's no help at all!", in a way that probably doesn't seem as hilarious in print as it did in action. Jimmy Garvin & Freebirds Promo Garvin is having a nervous breakdown over Stella Mae French. The 'Birds come out to commiserate, and Hayes tries to give him a pep talk and otherwise reassure him. Then they start to go off about penalty box matches and how they're glad Kerry Von Erich got "ripped off" for the NWA Title, because it's about time someone other than them got ripped off. Potential extra. Parsons & Zumhof vs. Super Destroyers (2/3/ falls) I like the Super D's/Irwins a bunch, but definitely prefer them in one fall matches, as their longer matches tend to drag. Also, Zumhoffe doesn't really do it for me, and I don't get trying to unmask your opponent in a match where their masks are on the line already. Basically, the same story as a lot of you longer Super D's matches: if they condensed it to one fall it might get a nomination from me. As it is, no such luck. Iceman King Parsons vs. Bill Irwin Supposed to be a rematch of the above bout, but Scott's knee is fucked up, so he can't compete. As a compromise, Parsons and Bill will fight in a singles match for the American Tag Titles. Bill was Super D #2, and struck me as the lesser half of that team, and this is a 2/3 falls bout, where the Super D's would usually falter, but he looked aces here. In fact, I'd probably give this a nomination were it not for the last two falls having stupid-even-by-World-Class-standards finishes: The second fall ends after Skandor Akbar physically interferes in full view and recognition of the referee, though it does lead to Wild Bill hitting that awesome jumping Yakuza kick. The second fall sees Akbar ringing the bell to try and trick the ref into thinking the time limit has expired when Bill is in trouble - as though no one would notice - which gets his team disqualified and gives Iceman and Zumhoffe the tag belts. Aside from both finishes being dumb, they're dumb in ways that contradict each other (first suggests referee is extremely lax, second suggests he's extremely strict), and it was just a matchbreaker for me. Buddy Roberts vs. Jules Strongbow Fun little match, considered it as a borderline nomination, but thought better of it. Chris Adams vs. Gino Hernandez (12:30) Before they could EXPLODE! Good, but not great. These two will go on to do bigger and better thing. Jimmy Garvin & Freebirds Interview Another likely extra from the dream team of early '84 World Class heels. Garvin continues to blow a gasket over Stella Mae, then the Freebirds come out, and he chews them out, too, because they couldn't keep Stella Mae off his back. After he leaves, Buddy says he can't blame him for being so upset, because he's dealing with the exact same "Texas baloney" that they've had to deal with. Then Hayes and Gordy wax poetic about the Badstreet match, and eventually it all flows into.... Skandor Akbar & Wild Bill Irwin Interview He's going to break Buck Zumhoffe's boombox into SMITHEREEEEEEEEEEEEEEENS! Kevin Von Erich vs. Michael Hayes (15:54) I expect more from these two at this point. Gino Hernandez Promo w/ Stella Mae Confrontation (2:20) Stella Mae was awesome. That is all. Kevin & Kerry Von Erich vs. Terry Gordy & Killer Khan (11:29) Like Kamala and Missing Link, Killer Khan was a really effective monster heel who could also be a great stooge when he wanted to be. First part of this match is all about his goofy antics as the faces get the better of him, and it rules. Then the heels take over on Kerry, and unsurprisingly, that rules, too. Then Kevin gets the hot tag and goes on offense, and that rules, too. Love how smoothly Gordy eats the flying headscissors. Then the heels take over again...well, I think you get the idea. Easy nomination.
October 15, 200916 yr comment_5445156 Kevin Von Erich vs. Killer Khan A fun little brawl while it lasted. Parsons & Zumhof vs. Super Destroyers (2/3/ falls) Another solid bout between the teams. The Super D's just do solid stuff in the ring. If they had more charisma the team would have been known as a great tag team. Zumhoff should work well with S. Irwin since he was in his AWA training class. As a kid I loved Zumhoff, now I just tolerate him. Again a solid bout, but nothing more. Iceman King Parsons vs. Bill Irwin This bout went too long for me. again the work was solid, but dragged a lot. I thought Parson's lariat in the 3rd fall was all sorts of awesome. I also dug Akabar's bell ringing B.S finish if done seldom. Buddy Roberts vs. Jules Strongbow I thought this was solid, and Roberts was great in getting Stronbow's finisher over strong. Chris Adams vs. Gino Hernandez I thought this was mediocre at best. I liked Garvin's bump at the end. Kevin Von Erich vs. Michael Hayes I thought this was ho-hum till P.S went to work on KVE leg. This was good stuff, and Kevin sold it well..... until he started doing highspots on the bad limb. Another solid bout that misses a nomination for me. Kevin & Kerry Von Erich vs. Terry Gordy & Killer Khan I thought this was the best bout on the disc. I liked it a lot, but it doesn't feel like a nomination to me. I too liked Khan in spades in this,. His facials are awesome. I feel this is a bout that will get lost in the shuffle.
December 8, 200915 yr comment_5446265 Decision Match for the vacant World Class TV Title: Killer Khan vs. Kevin Von Erich (5/28/84) This is the rematch from last week and a wild brawl from the start. David Manning can't get any control and calls for a DDQ with these two continuing to pound on each other as he calls for help. The Freebirds are the help that comes out to Marc Lowrance's dismay and this is great stuff. I think this little Kevin/Khan Fort Worth feud should be an extra. Then we get another tremendous promo featuring Garvin & The Freebirds and more extra material. American Tag Titles vs. Masks: Iceman King Parsons & "Rock n Roll" Buck Zumhofe © vs. The Super Destroyers (Wild Bill & Scott Irwin) (5/21/84) I saw the clipped version of this earlier and that may have been the best version as this was a fun little match that would've been better as a one-fall match. I also think they completely shit on the stip here by having the faces lose and unmask the heels anyway. They could've done a masks/hair match that would've made money. American Tag Titles: Wild Bill Irwin © vs. Iceman King Parsons (6/18/84) This was supposed to be a tag match but Scott was injured so they decided to make this a singles match for the tag titles which is always stupid to me. The psychology here is completely ridiculous which kills the match but these two did have a pretty good match in the ring. Buddy Roberts vs. Jules Strongbow (6/25/84) The work here was fine but the best part about this match is Michael Hayes on color commentary. World Class TV Title: "Gentleman" Chris Adams © vs. "The Handsome Halfbreed" Gino Hernandez (6/25/84) Gino is going for the Triple Crown here as he already owns the American & Texas titles in what I think is their first matchup. I liked this match more than the others did but even I felt it was a little disjointed at times. Garvin would come down to trip up Adams then Stella Mae ran out to chase him away then ended up in the ring where he would collide with Gino allowing Adams to win. Very fun stuff but not a nomination. Then we get another great series of promos from Garvin & The Freebirds that is extra material followed up by a fun promo from Wild Bill & Akbar. Kevin Von Erich vs. Michael Hayes (6/4/84) This starts out slow before Kevin puts the claw on Hayes before he could get to the floor. Hayes would recover and would go on the offensive after Kevin missed a diving elbow drop. Hayes would then work over Kevin's left leg relentlessly even breaking out the figure-four leglock and looked good here. Kevin though would recover then went back to working like nothing had happened after selling his ass off mere seconds earlier which was annoying. Hayes would end up tying Kevin up in the ropes so Khan could attack him until Kerry came down wearing a fucking suit to make the save. Kerry looking like a fucking Horseman making the save was awesome. Very fun stuff here but not a nomination. Gino is inheriting the Stella Mae French feud from Garvin since he is leaving town and this is the beginning of their rivalry. I hate Stella Mae unlike SLL but this is extra material. Terry "Bamm Bamm" Gordy & Killer Khan vs. Kerry & Kevin Von Erich (6/25/84) Faces dominate early getting the best of Khan who is great here doing his stooging monster act before Gordy gets in to change the pace after a big clothesline. Kerry fires back though with some great punches on both Gordy & Khan before Khan can counter back with his strikes. Kevin tries to come in to save his brother to no avail as Kerry takes some punishment from the heels before getting the hot tag to Kevin. Kevin runs wild hitting moves including an awesome headscissors takedown with Gordy taking a big bump but again the tide would change after an extremely rare miscommunication from the Von Erichs as Kerry accidentally hit Kevin with a punch as Gordy ducked out of it. Kerry would get back in as the 4-way brawl would start with Gordy getting the Oriental Spike on Kerry before Kevin runs over to lock in the iron claw before Khan would break it up. Bronko Lubich would call for the bell as the action got too wild and this was some damn good stuff. This should move forward.
