Jimmy Golden + Robert Fuller vs Dwayne Meadors + Mikey Finn Jr Squash. - highlights Eric Embry vs Gary Young scissors on a pole match LOL the scissors fell off the pole to Akbar and he gave them to the ref. This was all on camera. Dusek tried to explain this to no avail. int: Skandar Akbar w/ Gary Young - Beauty + The Beast promo 2. Bill Irwin, Brickhouse Brown, Tony Falk vs Cactus Jack, Gary Young, + Iceman Parsons This was fun while it lasted. - Jimmy Golden + Robert Fuller promo - Bill Dundee promo - Skandar Akbar promo - Jerry Lawler promo This was a great promo. 3. Chris Adams vs Cactus Jack This was o.k. 4. Eric Embry vs Gary Young - loser leaves town match I thought this was a good give and take match. Embry is a great fired up baby face. He was great here. The bout had a lot of drama. I feel this is a nomination. - Cactus Jack, Gary Young, + Skandar Akbar promo This was tremendous. 5. Eric Embry vs Cactus Jack - Embry's last match Fuck that was a huge back corner bump from Jack. Some of Jacks bumps throughout the match were insane. I can see why wrestlers thought he's be in a wheelchair at age 35. This was alright.Jack's bumps saved an otherwise lackluster bout. I dug Cactus Jack's piledriver. I liked how he worked Embry's neck, but the work was uninspired. Not a nomination. int: Percy Pringle petitioning to bring back Embry 6. Jeff Jarrett + Chris Adams vs Beauty + The Beast The pink ring is a cool gimmick. The work was solid. It just didn't get enough time. This Adams/Jarrett team had potential. 7. Kevin Von Erich vs Super Black Ninja Another bout between the 2 that was solid, but again not enough time given. Muto was good heeling it up. - Jimmy Golden + Robert Fuller promo int: Percy Pringle; Gary Young + Cactus Jack attack Percy - Kerry Von Erich video 8. Kevin Von Erich, Cpl Braddock, + Jimmy Jack Funk vs Gary Young, Kendo Nagasaki, + Super Black Ninja Braddock is the shits. This sucked. 9. Kerry Von Erich vs Gary Young - Eric Embry special referee The piece of business with Embry as ref made this fun. Still not a nomination.
January 15, 200916 yr comment_5436783 Fuller & Golden send in yet another taped promo about Kerry having a horse face. Robert Fuller & Jimmy Golden vs. Mickey Fynn & Dwayne Meadows (2/3/89) Squash. Then we get clips of a scissors on a pole match featuring Embry vs. Young from 2/3/89. This is a definite extra. Akbar & Young then challenges Embry to a loser leaves town match which he would answer in his own way. Beauty & The Beast then send in a taped promo announcing their entrance into Texas. Then we get clips of Brick, Falk, & Irwin vs. Cactus, Iceman, & Young from 1/28/89. Then we get yet another Fuller & Golden promo. Dundee then sends in a promo. Jerry Lawler then cuts a promo with all of his belts and tells the fans the story of him still being the real champion although the AWA had stripped him. Definite extra. “Gentleman” Chris Adams vs. Cactus Jack (2/10/89) Cactus hits all of his wild bumps here and Adams is good here as well hitting a nice diving smash from the top rope to the floor. Adams hit the Superkick on Cactus before Buddy Roberts would run out for the DQ as they are feuding and this sits up Beauty & The Beast jumpign Adams with Beauty spraying Adams in his eyes. Jeff Jarrett would make the save. Fun while it lasted. Loser Leaves Town: “Gorgeous” Gary Young vs. “Flamboyant” Eric Embry (2/10/89) This wasn’t a technically good match but it was a great payoff to such a hot angle with both men being great in their roles. The fans were very hot for this and the drama surrounding the finish was tremendous. This also started the Harold Harris storyline which was great. Easy nomination. Akbar and his crew would then have a celebration promo in the locker room and this is an extra. World Class Lt. Heavyweight Title: “Flamboyant” Eric Embry © vs. Cactus Jack (2/17/89) Percy Pringle does the commentary for the match as he is starting a petition to bring back Embry. Cactus went balls out here bumping all over the place for Embry who was working his official last match in the promotion but really wasn’t working like it. Embry worked this like a regular match which was odd since Cactus was the reason why he lost the loser leaves town match. This match still worked for me though because Cactus was such a machine here and Embry finally got motivated at the end when he started working over Cactus leading to Pringle coming down to ringside to go after Akbar as Embry used a gimmicked cowboy boot to get the win. Unlike shoe I think this goes on the block as it was pretty wild and Cactus was so awesome. Percy then cuts a promo about bringing back Embry and this is a definite extra. “Gentleman” Chris Adams & Jeff Jarrett vs. Beauty & The Beast (2/24/89) The pink mat was a cool concept and it was funny watching Adams react to it. The match was fine but nothing special. Kevin Von Erich vs. Super Black Ninja (Keiji Muto) (2/24/89) Muto had the advatnage early but Kevin would fight back leading to a spot where both men tried a cross body block at the same time and collided. This all led to Kevin breaking out the iron claw on Ninja before Kendo Nagasaki would show up for the DQ. The finish sucked since this was the best match between these two and like the other ones had the shitty finish. This was nothing but a setup for the six-man match that was to come later. Fuller & Golden then send in another promo. Percy Pringle then cuts another promo about Embry which would bring out the Devastation crew who would attack him. Extra material. Corporal Braddock, Jimmy Jack Funk, & Kevin Von Erich vs. Kendo Nagasaki, Super Black Ninja, & Gary Young (2/24/89) This wasn’t that good although I liked the stuff with Kevin & Muto. SR – Eric Embry: “Modern Day Warrior” Kerry Von Erich vs. “Gorgeous” Gary Young (3/10/89) Embry is the referee here because Harold Harris got injured and the match revolved around him instead of the work between the wrestlers. It was fun though and extra materia especially with the angle at the end.
March 15, 201015 yr comment_5448434 - highlights Eric Embry vs Gary Young scissors on a pole match I thought Dusek actually did a pretty good job covering for the fallen scissors. Young looked good here. Embry bled. I don't think it needs to be an extra. int: Skandar Akbar w/ Gary Young This, on the other hand, feels like a possible extra. - Beauty + The Beast promo This and the accompanying video were pretty out there. Possible extra. - Jerry Lawler promo The King cuts a great promo. Loser Leaves Town: “Gorgeous” Gary Young vs. “Flamboyant” Eric Embry (2/10/89) This was an excellent bout with Embry taking full advantage of the No DQ stip, pulling out all the stops to get payback on Young and Akbar. Almost immediately chucks Young over the top rope and handcuffs Akbar to the ropes to prevent him from getting involved, leading to a great, match-long freak out by Akbar. Great brawl before the No DQ stip comes back to bite Embry in the ass, leading to him losing the match. This was really well put together and perfectly executed. My top 30 is starting to get kinda crowded, but this is another match that could push it's way in. This moves forward. - Cactus Jack, Gary Young, + Skandar Akbar promo Great promo celebrating Young's win. World Class Lt. Heavyweight Title: “Flamboyant” Eric Embry © vs. Cactus Jack (2/17/89) If nothing else, this was probably Foley's first really great singles match. I am not as down on Embry's showing here as you guys are, either. He did some fine brawling early, and then spent most of the rest of the match getting his ass kicked by Jack. I liked his comeback at the end, with Mick taking another huge bump, and then Embry grabbing the gold-tipped cowboy boot to use against Jack and get his comeuppance. I second the nomination. int: Percy Pringle petitioning to bring back Embry Percy is fired up here. Akbar comes out with Cactus Jack, which in turn draws out Dusek and Brickhouse, and this whole thing goes into overdrive. Extra. “Gentleman” Chris Adams & Jeff Jarrett vs. Beauty & The Beast (2/24/89) Hot damn, this was a ton of fun. Apparently, Buddy Roberts is like WWF-era Jimmy Hart, only instead of just wearing jackets that correspond to the guy he's managing, his entire outfit is designed to match (the Samoan garb for the SSTs, and the pink belly shirt here). "Beauty" does some great stooging and laughs like Kefka from Final Fantasy VI. Lots of great stuff early as Jarrett keeps going after Beauty, but Beauty keeps ducking away, until Jeff tricks The Beast into a criss-cross segment where Jeff just exits the ring and attacks Beauty. The Beast isn't far behind, though, and the heels take over. Beast is serviceable but unspectacular. Beauty's work is OK, but he makes up for it with shtick. But Jarrett and Adams make for a great team, with Jeff being an excellent FIP and Adams doing his part on the apron. Schmozz finish with Buddy running in when it looks like the faces are about to win, but I liked this a lot and will put it on the block even with two guys against it. int: Percy Pringle; Gary Young + Cactus Jack attack Percy Young's "I'm a Winner" jacket is #1 and the best. Extra. Corporal Braddock, Jimmy Jack Funk, & Kevin Von Erich vs. Kendo Nagasaki, Super Black Ninja, & Gary Young (2/24/89) I liked this better than you guys, but it really wasn't anything special. SR – Eric Embry: “Modern Day Warrior” Kerry Von Erich vs. “Gorgeous” Gary Young (3/10/89) So I dig face Embry, and I dug Pringle's campaign to bring him back since there was some great micwork and beatdowns involved. That said, I'm struggling to get behind the angle on a deeper level because there's really no good argument to bring back Embry. He was hoisted by his own petard, something that even Frank Dusek - who is clearly being portrayed as a babyface sympathetic to Embry and disdainful to Akbar - admitted when he lost the LLT match to Young. I liked Embry turfing Akbar at the start of this match, but the rest of it just makes Embry look like a sore loser and makes the babyfaces (especially Dusek, who I have otherwise really liked in this role) look like moral hypocrites. Yeah, I get that Embry is kind of a Bill Dundee/Eddie Guerrero "heel with good intentions" type of babyface, but I'm having a hard time getting behind him here. And well, this match is more about him than it is about Kerry or Young, so...yeah.
