Posted January 2, 200917 yr comment_5436610 Fantastics promo on a scaffold - Ft Worth This is an awesome piece of business. - Kevin Von Erich video 1. Red River Jack + Scott Casey vs Black Bart + Jack Victory Victory takes some bad ass bumps. Guys just probaly loved working him. I always dug the Russian Assassain gimmick. This was fine for a t.v bout, but doesn't sniff a nomination. 2. Eli the Eliminator vs Henry Wilburn Squash int: Bruiser Brody This is fun stuff. 3. Al Perez vs Mil Mascaras This was poor, poor work. 4. Bill Dundee vs Mr Devastation - Memphis tv int: Eric Embry + Percy Pringle - Gary Young + Cactus Jack video Extra. This is an awesome video. int: Kerry Von Erich + Mr T Extra. Kerry looks like a girl with the shirt tied up like a knot. 6. Kerry Von Erich vs Bam Bam Bigelow Mr. T is in KVE corner. He's plugging his new show TnT where he plays a lawyer. This was an utter dissapointment. Mr. T got over though. 7. Bruiser Brody vs Texas Red Texas Red is green as grass. - Fritz's Scrapebook; Fritz talks about WCCW breaking away from the NWA 8. Rick Rude vs Missing Link 9. Kerry + Kevin Von Erich vs Michael Hayes + Buddy Roberts Kerry and Hayes battle of charisma at the beginning was awesome.Kevin is one snug mother. This is another good bout between the teams. Kerry's FIP work was good, and the Freebirds did a good job building the heat to the tag. Plus we get a fun finish. This goes on the block. 10. Chris Adams vs Gary Young Young bumped all over for Adams early in the bout. Both men are working hard. The wrestlers mixed in some wrestling and brawling. Adams did a neat looking Tope'. The finish blew, but it shouldn't keep this bout from making a nomination. Adams was good here, but Young was amazing. Good job from both men and a nomination. 11. Kerry Von Erich vs Al Perez I thought this was a good solid bout, but not a nomination. 12. Eric Embry vs PY Chu'i - cage match for control of WCCW; WCCW will now become USWA This bout was built up real good. Lowrance needed to show a lot more excitement on commentary. The guys told a basic story. I thought Tojo and Pringle made good 2nds here. This isn't a nomination, but should go on as an extra. It's amzing how the promotion put a positive spin on replacing WCCW.
February 3, 200916 yr comment_5437012 Scott Casey & Red River Jack (Bruiser Brody) vs. Black Bart & Jack Victory (3/20/87) Still funny seeing Brody wearing a Dr. Wagner mask. The match itself was okay for what it was. Eli the Eliminator vs. Henry Wilburn (3/20/87) Squash but Eli riding in on his motorcycle with Jim Holliday behind him was nice. Mil Mascaras vs. “Latin Heartthrob” Al Perez (7/14/89) This was sloppy at times as both men worked some of this in almost slow motion. Mil would win by DQ after Akbar interfered. Next we get a Dundee vs. Mr. Devastation match from Memphis. Embry & Pringle come out to talk up the future World Class vs. USWA match between Embry & PY and this is a definite extra. Then we get a video for Cactus & Young to Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf and this is extra material. Kerry Von Erich cuts a promo with Mr. T who was around pimping his new TV show called TnT which I vaguely remember and Kerry said that T would be in his corner against Bam Bam Bigelow. Kerry saying that T stands for what the Von Erichs stand for in Jesus and wholesome living is hilarious. Gary Young would show up to talk shit on T but would back up after T stood his ground. Definite extra. #1 Contender Match for the Unified Heavyweight Title: “Modern Day Warrior” Kerry Von Erich vs. Bam Bam Bigelow (7/14/89) T is in Kerry’s corner to offset Akbar. This was okay but not as good as it should’ve been although the finish was cute as Bigelow & Kerry was fighting on the floor when T heard the count and chunked Kerry in the ring to beat the count. Really disappointing match. Bruiser Brody vs. Texas Red (July 1987) Squash. Fritz then talks about why World Class broke from the NWA over a year earlier. The Missing Link vs. “Ravishing” Rick Rude (2/21/86) Nothing much to this. Kerry & Kevin Von Erich vs. The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes & Buddy Roberts) (2/21/86) Hayes being pissed that the fans thought that Kerry was sexier than him was great then the strut off between them. This is one of those matches between these families that just about any combination between them is going to be at the least a very good match and this was above that line. Kevin really throws some tight punches here aiming right for the head sending Hayes running to the floor. Kerry would get caught by the Birds playing the FIP well which he normally does as the crowd is really into it with the Birds working him over with sleeper holds. Kevin would get the hot tag getting the claw on Buddy before the 4-way brawl went down. Kevin would hit a cross body block quickly on Roberts to get the win as the crowd goes nuts. The Birds would then attack the Von Erichs with Buddy getting a figure-four on Kevin as Hayes got Bronko’s belt but Kerry would break that up with a discus punch. This is a nomination. “Gentleman” Chris Adams vs. “Gorgeous” Gary Young (7/21/89) Young takes a real pounding here to start the match bumping around like a pinball as Adams was pissed about his spike piledriver the week before. Young would get control though and started biting on Adams’ forehead but that didn’t last long as Adams was pumped up and went back to work on Young even using a figure-four leglock. Young to his credit fought back and eventually got a piledriver on Adams before bringing in a steel chair but misses Adams with it. Adams would hit a beautiful Superkick on Young but it would also knock down Tony Falk to the floor where Adams would nail both with a big tope suicida. Adams would then hit a piledriver on Young on the floor bringing out Cactus Jack who would take two big chairshots but with help from Akbar would nail him with his cast as the camera went black. Adams officially won this by DQ and this is a definite nomination as both men were just awesome here. One thing I’m not liking is the new camera shot from the side of the ring as they stay on it constantly. “Latin Heartthrob” Al Perez vs. “Modern Day Warrior” Kerry Von Erich (7/28/89) These two have a history so this should be interesting. Kerry looked good here to start throwing some great punches and was pretty fluid. Perez was fine and both men were getting going at the end as they were brawling on the floor but were both counted out in a crappy finish. Not a nomination. Steel Cage Match with the winner gaining control of World Class: “Flamboyant” Eric Embry vs. PY Chu-Hi (Phil Hickerson) (8/4/89) This is the money match of a 6 month long storyline and they played this up huge as Lowrance, Dusek, & Pringle were around the cage rooting for Embry getting the crowd pumped up. Was this a pretty match nope but it was what it was and both men performed well. The finish came out of nowhere as Hickerson missed a running splash into the corner and Embry cradled up the legs to get the win as the Sportatorium exploded. The babyfaces came out and celebrated after the match then Embry & Pringle ripped down the World Class banner to mark the end of the era. This is a definite nomination in my mind due to historic significance of the match and the angle that saved the promotion from a money standpoint for over 6 months.
March 26, 201015 yr comment_5448628 Scott Casey & Red River Jack (Bruiser Brody) vs. Black Bart & Jack Victory (3/20/87) I liked this match a lot more than you guys did. Black Bart has largely been a disappointment for me, and Scott Casey is very hit and miss, but Victory is awesome, and those last few yew years that Brody spent in World Class may have been the best run of work in his career. They both look pretty inspired here, particularly Victory. He and Bart work really well together as a team. Casey wasn't the best FIP ever, but was good, and had nice looking hope spots. Brody looked great coming in off the hot tag, and the finish was awesome, with Victory eating a very big boot indeed, Black Bart running in with a saddle to try and break up the pin, and Casey leaping over Brody and Victory to tackle Bart with the saddle landing on top of him, helping to build up their "Drugstore Cowboy" match. I don't really feel like fighting for this one, but it was still pretty great. Mil Mascaras vs. “Latin Heartthrob” Al Perez (7/14/89) You guys are talking crazy talk. This match was awesome. Mil puts on another clinic with his early matwork, and Perez acquits himself well with the brawling comeback. Mil's leaping headbutt on the apron before diving in with the sunset flip, and then headbutting the turnbuckle when Perez dodged a corner charge, was amazing. I kept waiting for the suck to kick in, and it never happened. The finish was screwy, but it's World Class. I don't care what anyone else says, this goes on the block. int: Eric Embry + Percy Pringle Extra. - Gary Young + Cactus Jack video Gary Young was a great wrestler, but you put these two guys' respective highlights together in a video package, and there's really no question as to who the real star is going to be. Extra nonetheless. int: Kerry Von Erich + Mr T T is said to stand for Jesus Christ...but he's also referred to specifically as "the King of Kings" twice. Does he stand for Jesus, or is he Jesus? Or can he do both at the same time on account of being Mr. T? Or was Kerry just kinda fucked up during this interview? Gary Young lamely joking about T wearing "fool's good" was great, and T is definitely one of the few non-wrestlers who can get away with scaring off a wrestler without making them look weak. Extra. #1 Contender Match for the Unified Heavyweight Title: “Modern Day Warrior” Kerry Von Erich vs. Bam Bam Bigelow (7/14/89) The action here was great, and Mr. T was a lot of fun as Kerry's second, but it wasn't structured very well and came off as needing more time to build. “Gentleman” Chris Adams vs. “Gorgeous” Gary Young (7/21/89) With pretty much all the faces in the company feuding with the Akbar/Yamamoto contigent at this point, I think Adams' stuff has really been the highlight. This match is a great example. Slap an actual finish onto this thing, and it would be about as good as any match I've watched so far. As is, it still moves forward easily. Steel Cage Match with the winner gaining control of World Class: “Flamboyant” Eric Embry vs. PY Chu-Hi (Phil Hickerson) (8/4/89) Normally, I wouldn't back this as a nomination just on match quality, but it is a very good match, it feels long for an extra, and it has to go on somehow. For long matches that have to be included on the set for their significance, this smokes Adams/Hernandez. It won't go high on my ballot, but I'll say yes.
