Both guys had plenty of nice-looking offense, which they showcased. Owen's work on Hase's midsection stood out. But this never got much beyond my-turn, your-turn trading of moves. Keiichi Yamada (Jushin Liger) vs. Masakatsu Funaki (1/11) - They worked a lot of this on the mat and looked pretty smooth. But it felt more like a competitive workout at the dojo than a fight over something important. Yamada was best as an underdog at this point and he didn't get to work that role. Hiroshi Hase vs. Shiro Koshinaka (2/1) - This match-up just hasn't worked for me. It's like neither guy could get across a point of view. They kept things moving along and did some nice stuff, but I don't know what they were trying to tell me. Nobuhiko Takada vs. Shiro Koshinaka (2/4) - They spent a lot of the match working holds, which wasn't a strong suit for either guy. The crowd just died whenever they went to the mat. Takada had a good sense of when to hit flurries of kicks to pick up the intensity. And they worked a good sequence where Takada missed a kick and got his leg caught on the ropes, allowing Koshinaka to work over his knee. But I wasn't so wild about their exchange of roll-up attempts near the end. They went to a 20-minute draw. This was one of their lesser matches and doesn't belong on the set.
