Posted March 9, 200916 yr comment_5437907 Wahoo McDaniel vs. Juan Reynosa (7/9/80) Tully is at ringside with Reynosa since he hates Wahoo and Tom Jones is on commentary to sorta even the sides. Wahoo gets the win even though Reynosa cheated some. David Anderson vs. El Fantastico (7/9/80) Anderson is working a Gene & Ole cousin gimmick although he has a white man afro. This went a little long. Relampago Leon vs. Nick Ramirez (7/9/80) Spotlight match for Leon who looked good here. Tully then cuts a good promo on Wahoo. Tully Blanchard vs. Joe Lopez (7/9/80) Squash but Wahoo would attack Tully after the match and posting him causing him to juice then the brawl continues after Tully gets pulled away as Wahoo cuts a promo Tully wants more. Wahoo then proceeds to whip his ass some more until Armand Hussein gets him out of there. Fun stuff. Armand Hussein vs. El Bronco (7/9/80) Squash. Then we get promos from David Anderson & Armand Hussein. The next show starts with promos from Chavo Guerrero & Ivan Putski. Wahoo McDaniel vs. Atsushi Onita (3/11/81) Funny seeing Onita & Fuchi working here. Wahoo gets off some great chops here and Onita hangs with him with some big chops of his own. Wahoo would win with a big chop and this was a fun match but not a nomination. Gino Hernandez & Tank Patton vs. Relampago Leon & Tug Taylor (3/11/81) Gino & Tank work well together as a team. Terry Funk vs. Gary Lindgren (3/11/81) Squash. Then we get promos by Patton, Funk, & the Dynamic Duo about the Southwest title tournament. Chavo Guerrero vs. Masa Fuchi (3/11/81) Chavo looks awesome here and Fuchi gets some offense in as well including a piledriver. Chavo would make a nice fiery comeback unloading on Fuchi but that would get cut off after a backdrop suplex. Chavo would fight back again even using the Butt Butt to set up a German Suplex hold for the win. Very solid TV match and good enough to be on the block. Eddy Mansfield vs. Lee Cole (3/11/81) Squash. Then we get promos by Wahoo, Conway, & Casey regarding the Southwest title tournament.
January 25, 201015 yr comment_5447347 Wahoo McDaniel Interview He's back and ready to challenge Tully Blanchard to a steel cage match for Tully's belt that'll leave him "lookin' like one of those big old MacDonald's burgers". Wahoo McDaniel vs. Juan Reynosa (7/9/80) Awesome competitive squash. Reynosa is both a wrestler and a referee for Southwest, but his impartiality has been put aside by the corrupting influence of Tully Blanchard, who has coached him to take on Wahoo. Reynosa is fun heeling it up, and he throws some nice shots. He fucks up eating a chop coming off the ropes, but overall looked good. And, of course, Wahoo beat the shit out of him, just as you would expect him to. Maybe the best squash match I've seen on these discs so far. Definite extra. David Anderson vs. El Fantastico (7/9/80) The Bob Ross-esque David Anderson may not be a real Anderson, but he is pretty damn good outside of his bizarre 90's indy finisher (well, not the running splash, but that thing he did before it). That backdrop driver was hideous. Relampago Leon vs. Nick Ramirez (7/9/80) Spotlight match for Leon, but Ramirez gets in a lot of stuff, too, and both guys look really good. I've never seen lucha matwork given that much of a spotlight in a mainstream American promotion before, and it is great lucha matwork. Later in the match, Leon starts busting out some cool athletic spots (add him to the list of guys who would have been better Tiger Masks than Tiger Mask), and Ramirez starts rudoing it up a bit. This felt more like a true lucha match than anything I saw in WCW's cruiserweight division. More like a true lucha match than 90% of CMLL matches in the last few years, for that matter. Southwest may have been the most Latino-friendly American wrestling promotion I've ever seen. This was a bit exhibitionish, and I normally don't push those kinds of matches as nominations, but the uniqueness of this bout means I'm going to make an exception and put it on the block. Tully Blanchard Interview Man, Tully has some unfortunate teeth. I never noticed that before. His promo is great, though. Tully Blanchard vs. Joe Lopez (7/9/80) Tully mauls Lopez, but won't let up after Lopez gives in to the figure-4. Wahoo makes the save in spectacular fashion, and this feels like an extra. Wahoo McDaniel vs. Atsushi Onita (3/11/81) Well, here's a match-up I've never seen before. Agreed with Kris, fun match, but not quite a nomination. Gino Hernandez & Tank Patton vs. Relampago Leon & Tug Taylor (3/11/81) Not so good. Fred Ottman was always bad. Chavo Guerrero vs. Masa Fuchi (3/11/81) Very fun match. Southwest had a really neat junior scene, and this is one of the better bouts to come out of it. I'll back it as a low-end nom.
