Posted March 18, 200916 yr comment_5438119 I’m digging the intro for the Southwest TV show here. Ken Lucas & Ricky Morton vs. Grenade Bowyer (Mike Boyette) & Ken Wayne (4/25/82) Lucas & Morton were a pretty good team in Southwest and they have some solid opponents here. Good little fast paced match that had Morton hitting a sunset flip off the top rope on Boyette to get the win. Lucas & Morton then cut a promo afterwards wanting the Dynamic Duo. Tom Jones vs. Hacksaw Duggan (4/25/82) Duggan has stopped over here on his way to Mid-South and is working a poor man’s Brody gimmick here. Killer Brooks would run in for the DQ as Jones was getting the best of Duggan. Bruiser Brody & “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater vs. Hacksaw Duggan & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan (3/16/82) This is a taped match from Hemisfair Arena. Brody & Slater are quite the team and if they win the match here they get 5 minutes with Buck Robley. Brody & Slater start off kicking ass until we get a double collision with Slater & Duggan allowing the heels to work over Slater inside and outside the ring and Slater is effective as the FIP. Brody would get the hot tag and starts firing away on Duggan before the 4-way brawl starts up as we have a ref bump soon thereafter. Robley brings a steel chair in the ring but hits Duggan by mistake with Brody getting the pin. Robley would then jump Brody starting their 5 minutes and he constantly goes for a black box he brought to the ring but Brody would cut him off. Brody beats Robley bloody until he goes for the black box where he brings out a jar before Duggan & Sweetan jump him. Robley then opens the jar and blinds Brody with the cream (Freebirds haircream) until Slater makes the save. Brody is great here selling the pain he is going through as he runs wild in the crowd like his Japanese entrances and this blinding allowed him to go on tour with All-Japan and Robley as well since he was suspended. The match was pretty good and the whole Robley thing afterwards made it even better and I think this whole thing goes on the block. Robley then makes his return in a promo where the announcers read a telegram by Brody saying that he is coming back for revenge. Tully Blanchard vs. Terry Gibbs (4/25/82) This had some good back and forth action and Gibbs even juiced as an old cut was opened up. Tully got more ruthless as the blood flowed until Lucas & Morton ran out to make the save. Duggan & Robley would come out as well but for naught as Lucas & Morton stood tall. This was fun. Chavo Guerrero vs. El Loco (4/25/82) Chavo looks great here. Killer Brooks vs. Frank Monte (4/25/82) TV time runs out during the match. Lucas & Morton start the next show out cutting promos on the heels in the area. “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater vs. Grenade Bowyer (Mike Boyette) (6/14/82) Slater looked really good here. Don Carson & Mongolian Stomper then make their debut in a promo. Mongolian Stomper vs. Frank Monte (6/14/82) Squash. We had an awesome angle after the match as a “fan” jumped in the ring to attack Stomper until Slater made the save. This is extra material. Bruiser Brody vs. Bill Ash (6/14/82) Squash. Killer Books & Billy the Kid vs. Tom Jones & Lone Eagle (6/14/82) This is your average mixed match. Gino cuts a promo on Buddy Landell who got a win on him a while back. Gino Hernandez vs. Buddy Landell (6/14/82) Man two of my all-time favorites against each other. Gino attacks Landell before the bell and works him over before the action would go back-and-forth. Gino gave Landell a good bit of offense but would finish Buddy off with the diving back elbow off the top rope. Fun stuff. Duggan & Don Carson then cut promos about the current events before Slater shows up challenging Duggan to a match. Hacksaw Duggan vs. Cocoa Samoa (6/14/82) Duggan wins fairly easily.
January 29, 201015 yr comment_5447435 I second the love for the smooth jazz stylings of the Southwest opening. Ken Lucas & Ricky Morton vs. Grenade Bowyer (Mike Boyette) & Ken Wayne (4/25/82) Good, fast paced match. Lucas and Morton were good, but I have to show some love for the Wayne/Bowyer team, who looked like they could make a really good regular heel tandem. I guess Grenade Bowyer is the happy medium between Mike Boyette and *APOCALYPSE*. Tom Jones vs. Hacksaw Duggan (4/25/82) Poor man's Brody is better than the real thing (not to be confused with The Real Thing), as he carries the thoroughly mediocre Tom Jones to a fun little match, delivering a nice beating and eating the babyface comeback offense really well. Jones doesn't look too good for most of the match, although he does hit a nice dropkick on Tim Brooks when he interferes. Bruiser Brody & “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater vs. Hacksaw Duggan & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan (3/16/82) This was a hell of a fight, and the post-match angle makes it even better. I guess Brody selling wasn't just a World Class thing, it was a Texas thing, as he really lets Robley dish out a beating on him even before the mysterious black box comes into play. Easy nomination. Buck Robley receives a telegram from Bruiser Brody Robley wearing a polo shirt is odd. Strong promo advancing a strong angle, feels like an extra to me. Tully Blanchard vs. Terry Gibbs (4/25/82) More Blanchard goodness. Chavo Guerrero vs. El Loco (4/25/82) El Loco stole Rayo de Jalisco's gear on the way to the show tonight. He looks pretty game, but so does Chavo, who beats him in a short but sweet match to avenge the lucha great. “Mr. Unpredictable” Dick Slater vs. Grenade Bowyer (Mike Boyette) (6/14/82) Really good match. *APOCALYPSE* Bowyer did some nice brawling and had great ridiculous wild-eyed facials, and Slater was at the peak of his powers here, taking it to the mat in style. Mongolian Stomper vs. Frank Monte (6/14/82) I never realized until just now how low to the ground the Southwest ring is. Match is a squash, and a pretty dull one at that. Stomper wins with the Shininamake, but he won't let up after the bell rings. A pre-fame (and pre-dye job) Buddy Landell tries and fails to make the save, as does a "fan" who gets busted open for his troubles, before Dick Slater hits the ring and is finally able to drive the heels off. Borderline extra. Killer Books & Billy the Kid vs. Tom Jones & Lone Eagle (6/14/82) This was a blast. The midgets work this match totally straight, and they are both really good pint-sized brawlers. Brooks is a lot of fun heeling it up, constantly going after Lone Eagle whenever he has the chance and backpedaling when Tom Jones comes in to protect his little buddy. Speaking of which, Jones looked a lot better here than he did in the Duggan match. This is a bit short (pun unintended) for a nomination, but I do think it belongs as an extra. Gino Hernandez vs. Buddy Landell (6/14/82) Good match. Kinda odd to see Budro in this phase of his career. Dick Slater interrupts Duggan & Carson Slater challenges Duggan, and all three men do some quality shit-talking. Possible extra.
