Posted March 30, 200916 yr comment_5438215 This show starts with Bob Sweetan telling the origin of his feud with Tully Blanchard and shows a taped match of Sweetan vs. Vladic Smirnoff aka Kortsia Korchenko featuring Tully going nuts on everyone piledriving them. Extra material. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. Tug Taylor (11/29/82) Tug is trying to collect the bounty but fails as he eats a piledriver. Grapplers then cut a promo wanting a shot at Lucas & Morton. The Grapplers (Tony Anthony & Len Denton) vs. Scott Casey & Terry Daniels (11/29/82) Some sloppyness here especially by the faces but the Grapplers won convincingly. Lucas & Morton then come out and accepted the Grapplers’ challenge. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers vs. El Santo Negro (11/29/82) Negro puts up a fight but Jaggers wins fairly easily. Ninja Warrior (Mr. Pogo) vs. El Gran Apollo (11/29/82) TV time runs out before the end. Don Carson & Grapplers start the next show whining about Ken Lucas being in the hospital thus cancelling their titles match. Tully Blanchard vs. Ricky Morton (12/6/82) Cool seeing these two work against each other here. This was fun as both men threw some good punches and Morton hit a dropkick on Tully who was on the apron and posted himself on the way down to the floor. Tully then bladed and Morton went to work on the cut relentlessly. Morton would get some nearfalls before going to attack Don Carson. Tully then nailed Morton from behind and got the pin to win the match. Like I said this was pretty fun with some blood thrown in and this goes on the block. Scott Casey vs. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers (12/6/82) Fine little match that would end in a DQ when Jaggers came off the top rope with a forearm smash after a double collision. Both men continued to brawl after the match before Jaggers used his loaded armbrace to hit Casey in the ribs. Morton & Sweetan then cut promos about the Grapplers. The Grapplers (Tony Anthony & Len Denton) vs. El Santo Negro & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan (12/6/82) Grapplers really work over Negro after Sweetan pounded on them to start the match. Negro would get the hot tag to Sweetan who cleans house before going for a piledriver that would be avoided after the other Grappler made the save. Sweetan then gets worked over as Morton shows up and takes Negro’s place. Morton rallies the crowd as Sweetan fights back and makes the tag with the crowd going nuts. The 4-way brawl is on as Jack Howell calls for the DQ since Morton isn’t a legal participant. Fun stuff as the fans were into it good. Then we get clips of Bockwinkel vs. Lawler from Hemisfair Arena in San Antonio. Tully then comes out in a suit with a bandage vowing revenge on Morton & Sweetan. Scott Casey, Ricky Morton, & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. The Grapplers (Tony Anthony & Len Denton) & Ninja Warrior (Mr. Pogo) (12/13/82) Morton is on fire early hitting a huracarana on Grappler #2 before a 6-way brawl would start and end quickly as the faces start this off in a big way. Casey would get caught in the heels corner though and would get worked over by all of the heels with the Grapplers keying on his left shoulder. Casey did a good job as the FIP before getting the hot tag to Sweetan who comes in firing punches before the 6-way brawl would break out again. Sweetan tries to hit a piledriver on Ninja but Don Carson would interfere for the DQ. Crappy finish to a very fun little match. Ivan Putski makes his return to Southwest and cuts a promo on the heels. Tully Blanchard vs. El Santo Negro (12/13/82) Tully looks good here and taunts Sweetan after the match who cuts a promo afterwards about kids injuring themselves trying the piledriver. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers vs. Juan Reynosa (12/13/82) Reynosa attacks Jaggers at the bell trying to get the advantage but that failed as Jaggers pretty much destroyed him. Adrian Adonis cuts a great promo on Sweetan talking all kinds of shit. Bockwinkel starts out the next show talking about everyone in Texas being partial against him. The Grapplers (Tony Anthony & Len Denton) vs. Ricky Morton & El Santo Negro (12/20/82) Lou Thesz working as the commissioner of Southwest is on color here. Grapplers really work over Negro here until he gets the hot tag to Morton who goes on offense before tagging Negro back in the ring which wasn’t a smart move since he did the job quickly. Next we get a promo from Ivan Putski who is back in the area. Nick Bockwinkel vs. Ali Bey (12/20/82) Bock again looks good here. Mike Graham cuts a promo about his feud with Tully Blanchard. Tully Blanchard vs. Mike Graham (12/20/82) Good little match with both men just pounding each other with a shitty finish as Graham reversed a Tully piledriver by backdropping him over the top rope for the DQ. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers vs. Terry Daniels (12/20/82) Squash. Scott Casey vs. Juan Reynosa (12/20/82) Casey wins easily. Tully cuts a promo with Adrian Adonis who is the next in line to collect the bounty on Sweetan. $5,000 Bounty Match: “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. Adrian Adonis (12/20/82) For a bounty match this was slow and plodding for a while but both men were laying in the shots. The punches start coming as TV time is running out with Sweetan coming out on top as he crotches Adonis on the top rope. Sweetan then has Adonis in a piledriver right as they cut to the end credits. They were early in using the bullshit TV endings. The next show starts with Steve Regal making his debut cutting a promo. Tully then cuts a promo holding his newly won Southwest Heavyweight Title beating Bob Sweetan in the finals of the tournament on 1/1/83. Southwest Heavyweight Title Tournament – Finals: Tully Blanchard vs. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan (1/1/83) Sweetan is bandaged up heavily from a previous match so Tully immediately goes to work on his cut but Sweetan fights back throwing some bombs. Both men pound each other here with Tully having the advantage since Sweetan is very weak. Sweetan would get Tully in a headlock but Tully would backdrop suplex him on the top rope before falling on him for the pin. Some good action here but way too short. Sweetan then comes out with Morton apologizing to the fans for losing to Tully but Morton won’t let him do it. This was great stuff and the Sweetan Mr. Piledriver red shirt is awesome. Then we get clips of Sweetan vs. Adonis in the semifinals of the tournament where Sweetan was injured followed up by an Adonis promo. Steve Regal vs. Juan Reynosa (1/3/83) Regal looks good in his victory. Grapplers & Don Carson want the Southwest Tag Titles because they have waited 30 days. Morton comes out and challenges the Grapplers to a handicap match for the titles. Handicap Match for the Southwest Tag Titles: Ricky Morton © vs. The Grapplers (Tony Anthony & Len Denton) (1/3/83) The bell rings and of course Ken Lucas shows up to a huge pop attacking the Grapplers and the brawl is on. This is all-action as the faces just work over the Grapplers who decided to tuck tail and run for the countout finish. Great angle. Mike Graham comes out whining about losing to Tully in the semis of the SW title tournament and they show clips of the finish of that match. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. Tonga John (The Barbarian) (1/10/83) This is JIP and Sweetan finishes off Tonga with a piledriver before attacking Tully. They brawl until Adonis jumps in the ring for the double-team ending in a spike piledriver before the faces clear the ring. This is extra material. Adonis & Tully then gloat in a promo afterwards. Ken Lucas & Ricky Morton vs. Adrian Adonis & Tully Blanchard (1/10/83) Give Southwest credit they book some solid TV matches unlike most territories at the time. The faces work over Tully to start the match with Morton looking great until he got caught in the heels corner with Tully getting the tag to Adonis. Adonis slingshots Morton’s neck on the bottom rope setting up the heel control section as Morton plays his patented FIP role. Adonis would chunk Morton over the top rope as Jack Howell’s back was turned before crushing him with a backbreaker. Adonis would miss a running shoulderblock into the corner though setting up Morton getting the hot tag to Lucas who would clean house. Lucas would put a sleeper hold on Tully as Morton would run off Adonis but Adonis would come back off the top rope on Lucas for the DQ. Shitty finish yeah but this match was as good of a TV match I’ve seen in Southwest so far and this is a nomination. Carson & Grapplers come out whining again about not getting the Southwest Tag Titles. The Grapplers (Tony Anthony & Len Denton) vs. Terry Daniels & Eric Embry (1/10/83) Embry is making his debut here and he would become a key player in angles down the road. Grapplers just destroy Embry’s left leg here but he would be able to tag in Daniels who tries to fight off the Grapplers but fails. Scott Casey comes out challenging Bobby Jaggers to a Texas Bullrope match in an angry promo so Jaggers decides to go to the ring. Texas Bullrope Match: “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers vs. Scott Casey (1/10/83) They fight for a little bit but TV time would run out. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers vs. Eric Embry (1/17/83) These two passed for twins here as they look almost exactly alike in every way except that Jaggers was bigger. Embry held the advantage for quite a while here to start as he kept Jaggers grounded with a headlock after getting some offense in but Jaggers would break free and started roughhousing Embry. Embry made a comeback though throwing some shots on Jaggers with Jaggers bumping good for him until Jaggers would load up his arm brace hitting him with a clothesline for the win. This had some good stuff but not quite a nomination. Jaggers then cuts a great promo on Casey calling him a “Kansas cowboy.” Then we get clips of the Grapplers winning the Southwest Tag Titles from Lucas & Morton on 1/16/83. Adrian Adonis & Tully Blanchard vs. Jerry “The King” Lawler & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan (1/16/83) We miss the start of the match but it doesn’t look we missed much and it’s always great seeing Lawler work outside of Memphis. As you could guess there were some great punches here especially on the face side as both heels ate some tough ones from Lawler & Sweetan. Tully & Adonis both bump and sell big for the faces with Tully especially taking a bump from the ring to the ringside table after an atomic drop. Lawler would go for a piledriver on Tully before Adonis would come in to attack him from behind which would begin the heel control section. Lawler plays FIP here which wasn’t the norm for him but this is outside Memphis and takes a pounding from the heels. I loved Adonis rolling off his neck after giving Lawler a suplex to get a cover for a nearfall. Lawler would catch Tully with a fist as he jumped off the middle rope before countering a Tully piledriver attempt with help from Sweetan. Lawler would then counter another piledriver attempt of his own by falling back on Tully for a nearfall leading to Adonis tagging back in. Adonis would miss a diving body press off the middle rope allowing Lawler to get the hot tag to Sweetan setting up a 4-way brawl featuring some great bumping from the heels. Tully would chunk Sweetan to the floor setting up a double-team on Lawler where they would go for a spike piledriver but Sweetan would jump off the top rope to save him for the DQ. The brawl would continue after the match before the heels left the ring. I hate that top rope DQ finish but this was a damn good match and a solid nomination.
