Tully Blanchard vs. Ricky Morton (12/6/82)

Cool seeing these two work against each other here. This was fun as both men threw some good punches and Morton hit a dropkick on Tully who was on the apron and posted himself on the way down to the floor. Tully then bladed and Morton went to work on the cut relentlessly. Morton would get some nearfalls before going to attack Don Carson. Tully then nailed Morton from behind and got the pin to win the match. Like I said this was pretty fun with some blood thrown in and this goes on the block.

Weird match. The action is really, really good, as you would probably expect from these two, but the structure is all wrong. Tully has been the top heel in the territory for years, but it's never really felt like he was the beneficiary of nepotism. I mean, he was, but if you didn't know his dad was the promoter, you wouldn't think it, because he was talented enough to deserve his spot and the booking didn't suggest anything was amiss. But this is a match where he is booked to get his ass kicked in spectacular fashion by a top babyface and hang tough. Even Steve Stack's commentary makes it sound like he's putting over Tully as a gutsy babyface. "I knew this Blanchard was tough, but I didn't know he was this tough!" Then you have the fluke finish, and it feels like we're missing the third act of a three act match. I'm gonna have to say no to this one.
