WCCW Digest: 1/84 - 5/84

Freebirds vs Von Erichs - 1/30/1984

This is another fight between the teams. It also has the rare team of David and Mike. Getting heat working over DVE leg was well done. This is worked like a Souther Tag with heat and shine spots. Kevin's run in was super charged. I'll give this a luke warm nomination.

Mike Von Erich vs Ric Flair - 1/30/1984

This was Flair just making MVE. The crowd was hot for the newest brother. Flair had better have gotten a stocked limo with some major babes for this performance. Flair bumped and stooged his ass.

Mike Von Erich strikes again (Pins Hayes in 40 seconds)

Prostituting your lead heel. The ideas were fine if their was big money in MVE.

Chris Adams vs Jimmy Garvin - 1/30/1984 (Cage)

After reading this I had to watch it and it was awesome. This is the best bout the 2 have had with each other so far. The mat wrestling was great. Particullarly the quasi mirror sequences. These men have wrestled each other a ton so it's a natural to mimmic a lot of stuff they do in the ring. At first I was a little dissapointed that the wrestlers take it to the mat in a cage match. But what is done on the mat is awesome, and it builds to the cage spots. The 2nds were awesome in this as well. The finish was sudden, but great because it follows the main theme that was set up in this feud. Garvin is perfect in his role; hell all the people are spot on in their respective rolls. I see this finishing high.

World Class Six-Man Tag Titles: The Fabulous Freebirds © vs. David, Kerry, & Mike Von Erich (1/30/84)

Okay this is hilarious as Gordy & Hayes are banned from Texas but they are back for this match because the Von Erich’s want the titles and if they win the match then Buddy would be banned as well. David Manning announces that Kevin was taken out by the Birds in the back and would be replaced by Mike with the Von Erichs running in the ring like maniacs chasing off the Birds. The crowd is nuts for everything during the pre-match and for the action in the ring too as the Von Erich’s were going full force. Both teams were of course working very crisply and I’m sure that Mike was like a fucking crowbar in there because everything he did looked awkward and hard. After some back and forth action, the Birds would get the advantage by working over David’s right leg furiously. David was solid as the FIP but god damn Mike had to get the hot tag and started working over the Birds but thankfully Gordy started beating his ass until Kerry got the hot tag and showed how it’s done. The action would again swing back and forth with both teams getting long amounts of time having the advantage. Kerry would have Buddy in a standing stomach claw before Kevin would show up bloody and bandaged and kicking ass all over the Birds for the DQ finish. The finish was cheap but it made sense due to the angle and the action here was really solid so this is an easy nomination.

“Nature Boy” Ric Flair vs. Mike Von Erich (1/30/84)

Flair was awesome here but god damn this is blood boiling to see Mike get put over so strong on Ric. Nepotism at it’s finest and Nick Gulas would’ve been proud. Mike lasted the full 10 minutes as David & Kerry celebrated after the match.

Mike Von Erich vs. Michael Hayes (2/20/84)

Hayes was supposed to wrestle Kelly Kiniski but Mike comes out to wrestle him instead in his street clothes and goes over in 40 seconds. Horrible.

Steel Cage Match for the vacant American Heavyweight Title: “Gentleman” Chris Adams vs. “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin (1/30/84)

Precious & Sunshine are both inside the cage with their men so that adds more to the match. This started out like a basic match but these two have great chemistry against each other and everything they do on the mat looks good. Adams juices first and Garvin works over the cut before Adams gets fired up and takes it to Garvin before taking Garvin out with the Superkick. This was only 11 minutes but it was full of action and pretty damn solid. Fairly easy nomination.

Next is Flair/Adams which I’ve seen.

Then we get a 10 bell salute to David Von Erich from Fort Worth on 2/13/84. This is a definite extra.

Next is the Heaven Needed a Champion video which is another definite extra.

Fritz then cuts a promo from Fort Worth on 4/16/84 where he announces that he is coming out of retirement for one night only to take on the Freebirds at Texas Stadium on 5/6/84. Before the annoucement, Hayes comes out to interrupt him and asks Fritz if Lance Von Erich is going to step in the match which is awesome since Lance Von Erich wouldn’t debut for another year and a half. Fritz beats on Michael of course and this is awesome. Slam dunk extra.
