Posted April 15, 200916 yr comment_5438509 This starts with clips of the SCW World Title tourney finals on 5/21/83 featuring Adrian Adonis beating Bob Orton Jr. to win the title. Adonis then cuts his first promo as champion and this is extra material. Bob Sweetan then cuts a promo with his newly regained Southwest title from Adonis so he could win the world title. Sweetan wants a world title shot of course. The Sheepherders (Jonathan Boyd & Luke Williams) vs. Scott Casey & Sweet Brown Sugar (Skip Young) (5/23/83) This was pretty fast paced with both teams tagging in and out frequently and trading the advantage off with no one getting any real momentum. Boyd would chunk Casey over the top rope allowing Jaggers to run out to post Casey who juices. Sugar would then get thrown out so the Sheeps could double-team Casey for the win. Solid TV match and I’m throwing it on the block. Adrian Adonis vs. Brickhouse Brown (5/23/83) This is the earliest I’ve seen Brick work and he gets squashed in a minute. Sugar would jump Adonis after the match and runs him out with dropkicks. Sheeps come out for a promo where they bury everyone. Scott Casey & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. The Sheepherders (Jonathan Boyd & Luke Williams) (5/30/83) Casey is out for revenge and now has Sweetan as his partner and he takes on the Sheeps by himself for the early part of the match. Sure enough though he would fall prey to the Sheeps in their corner but would work his way out to get the tag to Sweetan. The four men would continue to brawl with each other back-and-forth until Sweetan tried to piledrive Luke with Boyd falling into his knee to break it up in a cool spot. Sweetan would then get worked over by the Sheeps with a wound opening up and Sweetan juicing but Casey would come in to help out before being run out by Jack Howell. Sweetan would fire back with bombs before getting the hot tag to Casey who cleans house as TV time runs out. This was a very fun hard-hitting brawl and this goes on the block. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers vs. Sweet Brown Sugar (Skip Young) (5/30/83) Sugar is on fire here to start the match but Jaggers goes to the floor trying to get away until Casey runs out and throws him back in for the DQ. This would set off a brawl with the Sheeps getting involved followed up by Eric Embry, Mando Guerrero, & Sweetan. Sheeps then cut a great promo afterwards. Extra material. Adonis then cuts a promo on Ric Flair & Sweetan and this is fun. El Santo Negro vs. Adrian Adonis (5/30/83) Adonis would win this fairly easily then wouldn’t quit pounding on Negro so Jack Howell would DQ Adonis for that. Sweetan starts the next show cutting a promo about Tully wanting to get back the Southwest title. Jaggers then comes out with the Sheeps cutting a promo on Scott Casey. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers (6/6/83) This was going along fine until the Sheeps come out to save Jaggers from being piledriven for the DQ. Then we get clips of Scott Casey beating Abdullah the Butcher in the quarterfinals of the SCW World Title tourney on 5/21/83. The Sheepherders (Jonathan Boyd & Luke Williams) vs. Brickhouse Brown & Eric Embry (6/6/83) Sheeps really work over Brick as they basically destroy Brick’s left arm. Embry would get the hot tag and the crowd was into it and as this was going on, Sweet Brown Sugar took Brick to the dressing room. Embry goes to town on the Sheeps until he missed a reverse splash off the middle rope. The fans chant for Casey as Embry gets beat on but Sugar comes back out with Mando Guerrero cheering Embry on from the floor. Embry fights his heart out as the fans go nuts for him but the Sheeps would finish him off. I liked this whole segment a lot and I think it’s extra material as they really got Embry over here. Jaggers & Luke Williams talk about avenging the injury of Jonathan Boyd who almost got killed in a car wreck and Jaggers talks about his love for New Zealand. Fun stuff. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers & Luke Williams vs. Brickhouse Brown & Mando Guerrero (6/20/83) Funny seeing Rick Stewart as the ring announcer here. Jaggers & Luke look good as a team here. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. Spoiler #2 (6/20/83) This Spoiler looks a lot like Tank Patton and puts up a fight before falling to the piledriver. Christopher Love (Bert Prentice) cuts a promo with the Southwest title as Tully Blanchard is on vacation and they show clips of the edited version of Tully beating Sweetan for the title that USA Network wouldn’t air because it was too bloody. Sweetan then cuts a promo about the situation and this is a definite extra. Ninja Warrior (Mr. Pogo) vs. Masked Mauler (6/20/83) Sweetan would attack both men and failed in his piledriver attempt on Mauler before doing it again. Tiger Conway Jr. vs. Ninja Warrior (Mr. Pogo) (6/27/83) Tiger makes his return to Southwest here. Ninja gets some offense in here but this is more of a spotlight match for Tiger. Scott Casey cuts a promo about getting involved in a Stan Hansen vs. Larry Zbyszko match from San Antonio on 6/25/83 that we get clips of. Then we get clips of Casey vs. Tully from the same night. Jaggers & Luke Williams then cut a promo on the babyfaces. Eric Embry, Sweet Brown Sugar (Skip Young), & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. Ali Bey, “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers, & Luke Williams (6/27/83) Good back and forth action to start before Embry became the FIP which he was really good at during this period. Embry takes some pounding but would get the hot tag to Sugar before a 6-way brawl starts up that ends up with Embry being thrown over the top rope for the DQ. Fun little match. Christopher Love then comes out very angry about the video being shown of Tully being pinned by Casey. Then we get clips of Tommy Rich vs. Buzz Sawyer from San Antonio on 6/25/83. Too bad this wasn’t a complete match because it looked great. Sweet Brown Sugar (Skip Young) & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers & Luke Williams (7/4/83) This is a good long match from Hemisfair Arena although we do miss the first couple of minutes. This was a hard-hitting match with Jaggers being beaten bloody after being piledriven on the floor by Sweetan. Luke then turned on Jaggers refusing to tag back into the ring and blamed Jaggers for the loss after the match followed up by pounding him with the flagpole. Damn good match and this goes on the block with the angle in the end really making it strong. Southwest Heavyweight Title: Tully Blanchard © vs. Stan “The Lariat” Hansen (7/4/83) This is JIP after 5 minutes has passed. Hansen is great here as the asskicker just stiffing Tully with all kinds of strikes. Tully would run into Jack Howell before Hansen laid him out with a Lariat but it was only for a 2 count as Tully kicked out. Hansen would answer that with a dropkick before Chris Love would grab his leg as he attempted a bodyslam for the DQ. Horrible finish. Next is Zbyszko vs. Casey JIP around the 10:00 mark. No DQ: Tommy “Wildfire” Rich vs. “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer (7/4/83) This is also JIP around the 5 minute mark and we start with them brawling on the floor and Buzz using a chair to bloody up Rich. Lou Thesz reffing this match is kinda odd since it’s nothing but a brawl as Buzz just pounds on Rich on the floor. Buzz would slam Rich on the ringside table almost breaking it before going to the apron where he would miss a splash landing right on the table which had no give. Rich then made his comeback by working over Buzz and opening up a cut on his head before they went back to the ring where Buzz would get a nearfall after a nice suplex. Rich threw some great punches before Buzz headbutted him in the balls to get another nearfall. Buzz would hit his patented powerslam but decided to go up top for the big splash but misses. Rich then went up to the second rope hitting the diving fistdrop before throwing some more punches that led to another diving fistdrop from the second rope. Sawyer again though went to the balls of Rich to get him back down on the mat. Rich would come back though with a backslide on the mat for a nearfall as TV time ran out. GODDAMMIT this is the closest we will get to a Rich vs. Sawyer arena match on any set and we get no fucking finish. This was well on it’s way to a nomination too. Bobby Jaggers starts the next show cutting a promo about Luke Williams turning on him and this is some good stuff as Luke would attack him again with the flagpole. Extra material. Luke Williams vs. Luke Hatfield (7/11/83) Williams destroys Hatfield as Jaggers lies on the floor. Tully comes out for a promo talking about how great and important he is. Jaggers then cuts a promo from the production area taped after the taping vowing revenge on Williams. Midnight Express (Bobby Jaggers) vs. Luke Williams (7/18/83) Jaggers has to wear a mask and full suit to get a match with Williams. This was what you would expect from this angle as Jaggers unmasks in mid match and Luke runs to the back. Jaggers tries to burn the flag but Luke fights him off until Buddy Moreno helps out. Extra material. 6 Way #1 Contender Elimination Match for the Southwest Heavyweight Title: Ali Bey vs. Tiger Conway Jr. vs. Ninja Warrior (Mr. Pogo) vs. Sweet Brown Sugar vs. Bob Sweetan (7/18/83) This was a rare match for this time period as you never saw multiple man elimination singles matches. Tully would come out for color commentary and this was a fast paced match with lots of quick tags in and out to start. Sugar would eliminate Bey first with a beautiful dropkick from the middle rope leaving 4 faces and 1 heel so we get lots of face vs. face action. Sweetan would soon finish off Ninja with a piledriver thus leaving all 4 faces against each other. Casey would backdrop Sweetan over the top rope for the DQ and he landed hard on the floor. Next we get some fun work with Tiger & Sugar mimicing each other before Sweetan returned to the ring. After some good action with everyone, Sweetan would hold up Sugar by the legs and grabbed the top rope to eliminate Sugar and the fans along with Tiger weren’t too hot on that idea. Tiger then starts popping Sweetan before he chunks him to the floor by the tights. Sweetan then tries to keep him on the floor by pounding him on the apron but Jack Howell allows him back in the ring. Sweetan would go for the piledriver but Tiger counters with a backdrop into the turnbuckle. Tiger makes a comeback and hits a diving headbutt off the second rope going for the pin before Tully runs into the ring for the DQ and throws Tiger off the top rope to the floor. Sweetan looks upset after the match as Tiger wins by DQ. Even with the DQ finish I really liked this match a lot and this goes on the block. Sweetan then cuts a promo after the match pissed off about what happened before Sugar came out to say that Sweetan cheated to beat him and wants him in the ring. They have punchoff at the desk before Sugar goes to the ring where the brawl would soon start. Sugar throws some dropkicks and Sweetan bails out. Fun stuff and extra material.
May 16, 200916 yr comment_5439555 Tully v Casey Casey cuts a promo, and we get highlights of Larry Zbyszko vs. Hansen and we got highlights of Tully v Casey. Luke/Jaggers promo. Luke/Jaggers/The Turk v Sweetan/Embry/Conway Another fun studio bout. C Love promo Buzz Sawyer v Tommy Rich-San Antonio This was a blast for what is shown. Jaggers/Luke v Sugar/Sweetan This was a good tag that got a lot of time to develope. I thought Sweetan was ggod in his rugged FIP role. Sugar looked smooth. Plus we got a neat angle with Luke and Jaggers. I liked the stooge spots from the heels. Nomination. Tully v Stan Hansen, Love interferes This is JIP 5 minutes in. Larry Z v Casey, brawl w Hansen/Tully Jip also Buzz v Tommy Rich again It's a shame this is cut off because this was a hell of a brawl. Jaggers repents Nice angle, and a potential extra. Luke kills jobber after KO'ing Jaggers Great Tully promo Jaggers promo Jaggers is a good talker. Luke v Midnight Express(Jaggers) This was a fun little angle. 6 man free for all This was a blast and a nomination Sweetan/Sugar battle to end the show. Extra material.
March 28, 201015 yr comment_5448708 Disc 1: Adrian Adonis Interview We need to be talking more about Adonis as one of the all-time great micworkers, because he totally is. He challenges Ernie Holmes, and I wonder if you showed this promo to Meltzer if he would endorse Adonis for the Hall of Fame. Extra, and may The Great Gama roll over in his grave, Jack! The Sheepherders (Jonathan Boyd & Luke Williams) vs. Scott Casey & Sweet Brown Sugar (Skip Young) (5/23/83) This was really good, but a bit short, and I think we have a lot of better stuff to pick from. I think we could maybe throw it on as an extra (good short match, plus Jaggers' early involvement with The Sheepherders being a significant angle), but as a match, I say "no". Scott Casey & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. The Sheepherders (Jonathan Boyd & Luke Williams) (5/30/83) Now this is what I'm talking about! Totally wild match that's about as good as anything I've seen in Southwest. I second the nomination. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers vs. Sweet Brown Sugar (Skip Young) (5/30/83) I wasn't really into this. Adrian Adonis Interview Babyface Flair vs. Adonis in '83 would've been a pretty swank match. Poor Crazy Larry. Extra. “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers (6/6/83) Really good bout that needed a little more time than it got. The Sheepherders (Jonathan Boyd & Luke Williams) vs. Brickhouse Brown & Eric Embry (6/6/83) Eric Embry is the All-American Boy. He doesn't like heavy metal. He doesn't like rock 'n' roll. All he likes to listen to is Barry Manilow. This is another example of a match that's been put forward as a possible extra, but that I really don't see why it shouldn't go on as an actual match. In fact, I would dare say that this is the best Southwest match I've seen so far, and the first I've seen that stands a real chance of making my overall top 10. The entire babyface locker room emptying to rally behind Embry was amazing, and the match really comes off as larger than life. Jaggers/Williams Interview Awesome stuff about Jaggers' time in Vietnam, Williams crazed angry muttering and needing to be dragged off of the stage for their match, and the revelation that Boyd is staying in "Medical Center Hospital", which probably has no intentional connections to current WWE-speak, but I found interesting anyway. Extra. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers & Luke Williams vs. Brickhouse Brown & Mando Guerrero (6/20/83) Really good competitive squash. Might go with the above interview as an extra. Sweetan/Tully Aftermath Clips of the match shown really aren't as good as you'd hope they would be. Disc 2: Sweet Brown Sugar (Skip Young) & “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan vs. “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers & Luke Williams (7/4/83) JIP. I don't know how much we missed, but we still got a lot, so I think we can forgive that. The finishing stretch seems kinda weird until you realize it's setting up Luke's turn against Jaggers, which takes place immediately after the match. This moves forward. Southwest Heavyweight Title: Tully Blanchard © vs. Stan “The Lariat” Hansen (7/4/83) Not as good as I would've hoped. No DQ: Tommy “Wildfire” Rich vs. “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer (7/4/83) What's shown is great. It would be nice to get a Rich/Sawyer arena match on one of these sets. This won't be it. Jaggers repents Luke Williams vs. Luke Hatfield (7/11/83) Extras.
