Bob Backlund vs. Riki Choshu (8/24/84)

- I don’t want to kiss jdw’s ass or anything but Bob Backlund is pretty fucking great. In the Hogan-Inoki match, they would apply a hold and just fucking sit there. Every hold in the first ten minutes was its own little struggle. The first headscissors Choshu applies looked like it would rip Backlund’s ears off if he tried to squeeze out of it. Every hold, Backlund is twisting, contorting, finding pin attempts. He even finds a way to work in the deadlift signature spot in a way that seems completely natural. This was a super fun contest between one of my old favorites (Backlund) and one of my new favorites (Choshu). The countout ending sucks but we’ll see a lot of those on the set. I want this to move forward but not because I am sucking up to jdw.

Suck-up.

Seriously though. Here are my less flattering comments on the match ...

Decent match. Both guys were generally good at creating a sense of struggle in the early matwork, and they did that here. But it never built to any real crescendo despite the fact they traded some higher impact moves. I wasn't a fan of the ending. They tumbled over the ropes out of a Bob airplane spin and got counted out. The whole match was just missing something.
