Posted April 19, 201015 yr comment_5449672 Volume 06 (Good enough as is) 1980-1982 1. Rip Oliver & The Destroyer vs. Matt Borne & Steve Regal - 1981/07/11 - Early in the 1st fall, the heels lay a beatdown on Regal. Oliver was tagged in and proceeded to kick Regal directly in the chest. That looked kinda cool. Cool finish as Destroyer is pinning Borne but as Borne kicks out, it sends Destroyer into Buddy Rose and he is pinned after the collision. Rose and Oliver turn on Destroyer after the match. Too short to be anything. Possible EXTRA 2. Buddy Rose vs. The Destroyer - 7/18/81 - Early on, Rose plays chicken with D until Rose takes over after a quick chase. Rose is such a chickenshit. Destroyer takes control and controls mainly with punches and elbows. Looks pretty good so far. Pretty cool ending to the 1st fall as Rose attempts the big backbreaker, Destroyer blocks and counters with a piledriver. Rose kicks out so Destroyer unloads with a flury of punches until Rose stays down for the fall. For fall 2, Rose attacks Destroyer on the outside. Rose won’t let him back in the ring and attacks him every time he stands up. Love it. Love how the end pplays off the 1st fall. Rose gets the back breaker blocked again but with the damage to the back, Destroyer can’t hit the piledriver and Rose finally nails the back breaker for the pin. Fun fall. 3rd fall starts off awesome as Destroyer attacks Rose as he is coming to the ring!!! He busts him open on the ringpost, gets him inside and starts biting the forehead. LOVE IT! Destroyer attacks the cut! Buddy bails and gets counted out. Damn, that ended too abruptly but I liked too many things not to nominate it. Might get cut in the end but well worth watching! 3. Buddy Rose & Kim Sung vs. Matt Borne & Brett Sawyer - 1981/09/12 Kim Sung plays comedy foreigner heel more than evil foreigner heel which kind of kills it for me. Rose bodyslams Sawyer and he went flying. Looked pretty cool. Weird match as everything in the 1st fall just looks awkward. Buddy’s backdrop on Sawyer, Kim’s knife edge chop. First fall was weird as the heels were not really a cohesive team but Sawyer was playing FIP. Cool ending with Borne pinning Rose with a sunset flip form the top while Rose has Sawyer in a front face lock. 2nd fall was better than the 1st with the heels working better as a tandem and Sawyer again getting his ass kicked. Borne finally makes the tag after a long heat segment and we have another cool finish to a fall. 1st fall had this out of nomination territory. 2nd fall puts it back in contention. 3rd fall, Sung, cleans up pinning Sawyer shortly after Borne made the tag. Eh. I have seen so many badass Portland tags. I don’t even know if I would put this on the Rose comp because it was mainly the Sung show. 4. Buddy Rose & Kim Sung & Stan Stasiak vs. Matt Borne & Steve Regal & Iceman King Parsons - 1981/09/19 - Stasiak sorta sucks but they give over the idea that Parsons has a hard head. However, Sung vs. the faces was fun. Not enough Bddy Rose in this fall. Things pick up when Regal plays FIP and the heels work him over. I would hate to have Buddy Rose jumping on me while laying across the ropes. Stasiak’s entire offense is throwing the opponent out of the ring. Good thing the other two are there to keep it moving. Oh Christ, Stasiak gives Ice the nerve hold. At least he was pinned after the faces double team him. 2nd fall, Buddy Rose vs. Regal was fun. In fact, when Rose was in there, this was fun. When he wasn’t not so much. At least the finish played off Regal as the face who was punished the most as Stasiak gives him a heart punch and gets the pin. 3rd fall, match ends quickly with all 6 men brawling outside of the riing and the whole thing being thrown out. I’ll pass on this match. 5. Buddy Rose vs. Steve Regal - 1981/10/24 - Stasiak and ??? are locked in a cage outside the ring to prevent them from interfering. The 1st fall is based around Regal controlling with a headlock. Rose has some fun escapes but they are working a really slow pace. I really wish Regal was working the headlock more but Rose is pretty great. Rose finally gains control after crotching Regal on the ropes out of a headlock. Good escape! To add insult injury, Rose crotches Regal around the ringpost and grabs the pin. Mixed bag on the 1st fall. Regal went out like a bitch. 2nd fall, Rose is in control and I really prefer Rose on offense. He even gets the caged animals in the act when the whole purpose of the cage was keeping them form interfering. When Regal fights back, he turns the tide with an atomic drop. Instead of taking the pin, he pulls Rose up before the three… and crotches Rose on the ringpost. Genius! Regal gets the pin. 3rd fall, Regal controls early and decides not to to waste time with that headlock shit. He injures Rose’s big belly and works him over with a freaking stomach claw. Rose rakes the eyes to gain control and beats the fuck out of Regal. He chokes him out with a rope from under the ring, rams him into the ringpost and bashes him in with a chair. Regal fights his way into the ring but takes a huge bump outside. Rose thinks he can use the chair again but Regal fucking gets it and beats the fuck out of Rose and then chokes him out with the rope under the ring. Fucking A!!! This picked up huge. The cages rats come intoplay and choke out Regal when he gets close to the cage. Rose gets distracted and Regal gets back in the ring and gets pinned on a rollup. Fuck man, the first fall was slow but the last two falls ruled. All hell breaks loose. I love Portland wrestling. DISC 2 - Buddy Rose and Rocky Johnson have a confrontation. Rocky is bloodied up. 6. Rocky Johnson vs. Stan Stasiak - 1981/11/07 - Rocky dodges a heart punch and pins Stasiak after a dropkick. Nothing to see here. 7. Rocky Johnson vs. Buddy Rose - 1981/11/07 - Rocky has some cartoony offense like the wind-up punches but Buddy sells them well enough. Rose gains control and starts working over Johnson’s back. It looks a little awkward watching fat, short Buddy Rose give tall, muscular Rocky Johnson a standing bearhug but Rose whips Rocky into the turnbuckle to add more damage. Rocky eventually escapes and gets the flash pin off a roll-up. Good enough but nothing that really stands out. Hmmm… I couldn’t tell if this was one fall only or if we only got the first of a 2/3 fall. 8. Chris Colt vs. Sandy Barr - 1980/02/21 Listed but not on disc 9. Rick Martel & Roddy Piper vs. Butch Miller & Luke Williams - 1980/01/26 - The faces work a headlock, tagging in and out. Martel comes in later and switches from the headlock to the head scissors. Eventually the Sheeps take over and they punish Rick Martel. Martel plays FIP as the Sheeps work over Martel S neck after a piledriver. Martel makes a hot tag and after Piper cleans house, Martel hooks on the sleeper and gets the 1st fall. Good enough for govt. work. 2nd fall, the faces start in control but eventually the tides turn and Piper ends up as FIP. When Martel gets tagged in, he fights off Luke but goes for a flying cross body, misses and gets pinned shrtly after. Real quick 4 minute fall. Sheepherders Interview (Possible EXTRA if match doesn’t make it) 3rd fall, looks like it is JIP. Looked like they were going to work over Butch’s back but Luke gets tagged in and they attack his back. Really nice offense here. ON the 3rd fall, it breaks outside, and Piper ends up bleeding from the ear but you can’t see what happened and the ref takes the belts and holds them up. Damn, I don’t think we have the rematch. Anyway, not enough for a nomination here. 10. Rocky Johnson vs. Stan Stasiak - 1982/02/06 - Stasiak works over the nerve hold. Yay. Rocky fights back and he has a nice punch. Stasiak definitely likes to take his time and I already want the match to end. Actually, I think I would like to see a Rocky-Martel match. At one point, Stasiak gets tied in the ropes and Rocky throws the sweet punches but the ref stops him. Looks like that is a story of the match developing… Rocky using punches and the ref stopping him. The other story is Stasiak’s boring offense. Rocky wins fall 1 with the dropkick. 2nd fall, blink and you miss it. Rocky goes for the dropkick, misses and gets caught with a heart punch for the pin. 3rd fall, looks like Stan immediately hits a punch but Rocky drops a foot over the rope. Stasiak hits him again but gets two. Stasiak thinks it was three because Rocky taps him on the back and Rocky gets the roll up. Eh, I’ll pass on this one. The Army handcuffs Rocky after the match but Sawyer saves. 11. Buddy Rose vs. Brett Sawyer - 1982/02/13 - Rose and Sawyer start off in the ring while Borne abuses Regal outside. Once again, Rose makes every little move seem important. Even missing a forearm smash, he slaps his forearm to let the ref know it was legal and let himself know he needs to connect. Then his bumping rules. One spot sees him trying to throw Sawyer out only to get reversed and see him go ass first on the floor. Rose gets caught in a backslide and he demonstrates on the ref how Sawyer pulled his hair to get him in the slide. I love this type of shit. Sawyer works the headlock and they work out of the headlock. It just seems much faster paced than the Regal match. Rose takes control with a back suplex out of the headlock. I sound like a broken record but Rose rules on offense and after working on the back, hits the back breaker for the 1st fall. 2nd fall, Rose works on the back but Sawyer fights back and gets Rose tangled in the ropes. He takes a rowdy bump outside as he charges rose but Rose escapes and Sawyer heads to the floor. Rose works on the back and hits the backbreaker again but Sawyer flips him over for the upset pin. 3rd fall, Rose continues on the back and he is a master at dishing out the pain. Sawyer fights back with some nice offense and they battle back and forth. Initially, through the 1st two falls, it looked like this was Rose’s match but this 3rd fall was a reald battle. IT just felt epic at the end with the crowd going wild. Borne interferes allowing Rose to get the pin. Silly ending aside, the match gets the nomination. The ref talks to the crowd and takes the win away from Rose. The fight continues with the two teams battling it out. Borne and Regal fight in the Crow’s Nest. I need to check Disc 7 to see if this needs to go before Regal / Borne. 12. Buddy Rose vs. David Schultz [partial] - 1982/02/13 This is the last few minutes of a bloody brawl between Schultz and Rose and probably shouldn’t make the set proper (although it goes on a Rose comp) but is a definite extra.
