DVD #24

10/31/87 Special

1. Tiger Mask/Shinnichi Nakano vs. Tiger Jeet Singh/George Weingroff (9:36)

Shockingly, this isn’t a very good match. Weingroff has gone Arab in the last 5 months, apparently. With his stubble and camo pants he looks like a cross between McGuyver and Kevin Rowlands. Singh is amusing making tard faces to the crowd and acting like he has tourette’s and doing some nice throat thrusts. But TM just kinda hangs back and eventually pins Weingroff with a small package. Bland.

2. John Tenta/Isao Takagi vs. Genichiro Tenryu/Ashura Hara (5:43)

Damn this was awesome. Four sumo guys in the ring just slapping the crap our of each other. Yeah, it only goes 6 minutes, but who cares!? The lariat Hara gives Takagi is worth the price of admission right here. Tenta hits a giant powerslam. Tenryu irish whips Hara into the corner where Hara delivers the nastiest corner splash on Takagi that I have ever seen. Final run sees Tenryu/Hara giving a fierce beating to Takagi, only for Tenta to break up a few pinfalls, so Hara calmly waits until Tenta gets back to the apron…then runs over and boots him right off! Tenryu with the big powerbomb, done. This was tons of fun, and I’m gonna nominate it just so the others check it out. This is the best possible Worldwide match. When this is all done we can make a comp of “6 minute matches that Eric Nominated that everybody else hated.” NOMINATE!

3. Road Warriors vs. Jumbo Tsuruta/Yoshiaki Yatsu (12:16)

This definitely had its moments but you KNEW it wasn’t going to have a finish. Lots of standard Road Warriors stuff like Hawk popping up from the piledriver to hit a really nice dropkick, great fistdrop from Hawk (sounds like the announcer calls it a “brain punch”, awesome) and right when the match really kicks into high gear and the crowd is fully behind Yatsu’s comeback after a nice run of offense, both teams spill out onto the floor and you know what happens next.

11/8/87 (11/7)

1.Rusher Kimura/Goro Tsurumi vs. Great Kabuki/Masa Fuchi (2:31/9:33)

This looked cool for what got shown, but 2 minutes ain’t too much to go off of. Kabuki it an awwwwesome body shot that looked really painful though.

2. Jumbo Tsuruta/Yoshiaki Yatsu vs. Ashura Hara/Samson Fuyuki (9:58)

Yes, it’s only 10 minutes, but what a fun 10 minutes this was. Hara has become one of my absolute favorites on this set as he’s looked good playing the lower totem pole guy on the team, and looked good here playing the veteran of the team. Fuyuki was super fired up and not chubby (like in FMW years later) and gets a couple of GREAT 2 counts against Jumbo. I’m not so jaded that I actually bought the first one. This was a really fun, well-worked tag. It MIGHT not be enough to nominate, but I'm gonna do it. NOMINATE!

3. Genichiro Tenryu vs. Hiroshi Wajima (16:18)

This really wasn’t too bad, especially for a Wajima match that goes 16 minutes. Sometimes the offense looked bad from both guys, sometimes Wajima’s looked better than normal. Crowd starts getting into it when Tenryu starts throwing him into the guard rails, and Wajima runs back in the ring and starts throwing realllly hard shots to Tenryu, all fired up. The ending is the best part as Wajima is getting back into the ring and Tenryu sprints across the ring and crossbodies him to the floor, staying in the ring while Wajima went flying off the apron. Not a good match, but watchable for sure.

4. Battle Royal

This has no ending. I always perversely enjoy these things, just a bunch of people walking around and chopping each other. Hara stiffs a bunch of people and Eigen gets pinned and then the episode cuts off L
